One of Brisbane's last major riverfront redevelopment opportunities has taken a significant step forward, with Lendlease selected as the Queensland Government's preferred development partner for the former Visy site in South Brisbane.

The seven-hectare industrial site, positioned between South Bank and West End and 1.3 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD, will be transformed into a mixed-use precinct expected to deliver more than 4,000 new homes alongside extensive public open space and riverfront parkland.

The project is one of the largest urban renewal opportunities currently planned in Brisbane and is expected to play a key role in accommodating the city's growing population ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Plans for the precinct include a network of riverfront promenades and boardwalks, new public plazas, parkland, amphitheatre-style gathering spaces and shared pedestrian and cycling links designed to reconnect the long-isolated site with the Brisbane River.

The Queensland Government is targeting delivery of the first homes and key public spaces before the 2032 Games, allowing the precinct to begin contributing new housing and public amenity well before the broader masterplan is complete.

The redevelopment is also expected to support more than 3,000 jobs across planning, construction and ongoing operations.

For Lendlease, the appointment adds another major urban regeneration project to its Queensland portfolio. The developer has operated in the state for more than 70 years and has delivered a number of large-scale mixed-use precincts in partnership with government.

Lendlease Development CEO Claire Johnston said the project represented one of Brisbane's most significant redevelopment opportunities.

"The transformation of the former Visy site represents a rare opportunity to reimagine one of Brisbane's most significant riverfront locations, deliver thousands of much-needed homes, and create long-term legacy," Johnston said.

"In partnership with the Queensland Government, we have the opportunity to create a new riverside destination that will help shape Brisbane's growth and how people experience the city for decades to come.

"This is exactly the type of large-scale, city-shaping development that will provide lasting benefits for Queensland, bringing together housing, jobs and world-class public spaces."

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie said the riverfront transformation would deliver a thriving new community precinct.

“The Crisafulli Government is delivering this golden opportunity to unlock a riverfront jewel for all Queenslanders,” Deputy Premier Bleijie said.

“This is a once-in-a-generation moment to reshape a significant slice of Brisbane and deliver lasting benefits – thousands of new homes, and public spaces for all Queenslanders to enjoy well beyond the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games – unlike Labor’s plan which would have delivered zero benefits and zero new homes.

“Queensland is well and truly open for business and through partnership with the private sector, we are accelerating delivery while ensuring strong housing, community and economic outcomes."

Early works on the precinct are expected to commence in April 2027.

Lendlease selected to deliver transformative South Brisbane riverfront precinct

Eddy Haddad's <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/developers/level-33">Level 33</a> is levelling up its approved Wollongong development, as the coastal city south of Sydney continues to prove popular in the high-density development space.

Level 33, a longtime developer in the Wollongong area, has gone through the NSW Government's Housing Delivery Authority to upsize its approved two-tower development on the corner of Crown Street and Gladstone Avenue, just 100 metres from Wollongong Station.

The developer currently has approval for 252 apartments across two buildings rising to 19 storeys. It is now seeking approval for 33 and 38-storey towers that would deliver 467 apartments, including 67 affordable homes.

Designed by <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/architects/bka-architecture">BKA Architecture</a>, the development would comprise apartments above a three-level podium with around 1,100 sqm of retail space, along with basement parking for 448 vehicles.

According to the Urban Design Report by BKA, the proposal has the capacity to "reinforce the precinct's identity by strengthening links between health, education, and transport services, while also contributing to Wollongong's ongoing evolution as a key regional centre."

Wollongong is somewhat in vogue. Between Level 33 and Urban Property Group, the two developers have several thousand apartments planned across the city.

Level 33 is currently delivering Easterly Wollongong, one of its most boutique projects to date with just 21 high-end apartments, as well as Atchison &amp; Kenny, a 329-apartment development due for completion later this year.

The developer plans to redevelop the 13,088 sqm WIN Grand megasite into <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/crown-square-216-238-keira-street-wollongong-nsw-2500">Crown Square</a>, a new $500 million precinct with nearly 600 apartments. It also has more than 900 apartments planned for the former Bunnings Warehouse site at the intersection of Gipps and Flinders streets.

Urban Property Group is also playing a major role in the city's transformation. Its five-tower Keira Place precinct will deliver more than 800 homes, and it has recently lodged plans for a further 300 apartments near Wollongong Station.

Just a week after filing plans for the final stage of its major Keira Place masterplan, <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/developers/urban-property-group">Urban Property Group</a> has unveiled another significant housing proposal in Wollongong, this time targeting a prominent site opposite North Wollongong Station.

The developer has lodged a State Significant Development Application for a 38-storey mixed-use tower at <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/4-4a-flinders-street-north-wollongong-nsw-2500">4-4A Flinders Street</a>, around one kilometre north of the <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/keira-place-wollongong-120-122-smith-street-wollongong-nsw-2500">Keira Place precinct</a> currently taking shape on the edge of the CBD.

Designed by Studio.SC, the proposal comprises a 38-storey mixed-use development containing 303 apartments, including 45 affordable housing units, alongside 174 co-living residences. The scheme also includes ground-floor retail space, extensive landscaping and public domain improvements.

Studio.SC noted in the proposal it "outlines a vision for a landmark transit-oriented mixed-use development centred around North Wollongong Station, designed to support the city’s future growth while responding to the NSW Government’s housing and planning reforms."

The architecture firm said the proposal responds to the opportunities and constraints shaping future growth within the 400-metre catchment of the station and represents "a coordinated and future-focused approach to urban intensification, contributing to the long-term evolution of North Wollongong as a connected, walkable and high-density station precinct."

The site occupies a strategic corner bounded by Flinders Street, Station Street, Stafford Street and the Princes Highway, directly opposite North Wollongong Station.

The proposal follows Urban Property Group's recent submission for the second and final stage of Keira Place, which would deliver a further three buildings comprising 657 homes opposite Beaton Park. It builds on the first stage, which features 150 apartments across two towers and recently commenced construction.

Urban Property Group CEO Patrick Elias said breaking ground on the first stage marked a significant milestone for Wollongong and reflected the developer's long-term commitment to regional cities.

"Today's groundbreaking is about turning approvals into homes and moving quickly to deliver much-needed housing in Wollongong's city centre," Elias said.

"Keira Place will provide a diverse mix of homes close to jobs, transport and services, while setting a high benchmark for quality, durability and consumer protection."

First look: Urban Property Group plans next major Wollongong tower

<a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/developers/arada">Arada Australia</a> has wasted little time expanding its ambitions in Campsie, lodging plans for a second major project in the rapidly transforming town centre just months after unveiling its three-tower One Campsie proposal on Beamish Street.

The UAE-backed developer has now taken aim at one of the suburb’s most strategically positioned sites, filing a State Significant Development Application for a <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/10-north-parade-campsie-nsw-2194">33-storey mixed-use tower</a> at 10 London Street and 43 North Parade, directly opposite the future Campsie Metro Station. The proposal is currently on public exhibition and represents another significant vote of confidence in Campsie's emergence as one of Sydney’s key transit-oriented growth centres.

Designed by <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/architects/woods-bagot">Woods Bagot</a>, the development would deliver 156 apartments above a podium containing retail and commercial space, creating a new residential and commercial gateway to the town centre. The scheme also includes a four-level above-ground parking podium and a dedicated residential amenity floor featuring wellness and recreation facilities. At least 10 per cent of the apartments would be allocated as affordable housing for a period of 10 years.

The proposal occupies a 1,631 sqm site bounded by London Street, North Parade and Dispensary Lane, immediately adjoining the future Metro station precinct and just metres from Beamish Street’s retail and dining strip. According to the Urban Design Report, the project seeks to deliver "a great place that prioritises human-scaled experience and provides spatial improvements to the area."

Woods Bagot describes the tower as a key marker within Campsie's next phase of growth.

"Located directly opposite the new Campsie Metro Station on North Parade, 10 London Street is a thoughtfully composed 33-storey mixed-use tower that contributes to the ongoing transformation of the town centre," the Architectural Design Report states. The report says the project is intended to provide "high-quality homes within a vibrant, connected urban environment, while helping define Campsie's future skyline."

A strong emphasis has been placed on the public realm. The ground floor incorporates over 500 sqm of retail space and active frontages along both London Street and North Parade, while the podium is wrapped by extensive landscaped planting intended to soften the building's scale and strengthen the pedestrian experience. The development would also widen surrounding footpaths and improve connections between the Metro station and the broader town centre.

Above the podium, residents would have access to more than 1,400 sqm of communal amenities, including a pool, gym and landscaped recreation spaces. A distinctive green-wall treatment extending across four podium levels forms a major architectural feature, helping differentiate the project within the emerging high-density precinct.

The tower's design is closely tied to the broader Campsie Town Centre Master Plan and the arrival of Sydney Metro. The Urban Design Report notes the proposal "directly supports the Campsie Town Centre Master Plan by delivering new homes in a location explicitly identified for growth, improved accessibility, and high-quality urban renewal." It adds that the project contributes to the master plan's vision for a strengthened town centre supported by thousands of new homes around the future Metro station.

The application follows Arada Australia's recently lodged One Campsie project at 124–142 Beamish Street and 16–18 Ninth Avenue, where the developer is seeking approval for 346 apartments across three towers rising 24, 32 and 39 storeys. Together, the two proposals would cement Arada Australia as one of the most influential developers shaping Campsie's future urban form.

For the first time in a long time, Australia's inflation story is starting to look more like a landing than a fight.

The latest Consumer Price Index figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed annual inflation eased to four per cent in May, down from 4.2 per cent in April. On the surface, that might not seem like a major move. Inflation remains above the Reserve Bank's target range and some categories continue to record stubborn price growth.

But the significance of this result lies less in where inflation sits today and more in what it means for where interest rates are likely heading next.

The biggest takeaway is that inflation continues to move in the right direction.

Markets had been bracing for another sticky result after a period where progress appeared to stall. Instead, headline inflation came in softer than expected, helped by falling fuel prices and easing transport costs. Annual transport inflation halved from 6.6 per cent in April to 3.3 per cent in May, while automotive fuel prices fell 11.9 per cent during the month following lower oil prices and the impact of reduced fuel excise measures.

While petrol prices don't solve Australia's affordability challenges, they are one of the most visible and immediate costs for consumers. Falling fuel costs feed through the economy quickly, helping ease pressure on household budgets and business operating expenses.

The ABS data also showed headline inflation is now sitting at its lowest annual level in several months, reinforcing the broader trend that price growth is gradually moderating.

That trend is important because it aligns with what many economists and lenders have been saying for the last month.

Prior to this week's inflation data, ANZ, NAB and Commonwealth Bank had all shifted their forecasts, now believing the Reserve Bank had likely reached the peak of the interest rate cycle. Following the May inflation release, ANZ reaffirmed that view.

In its latest economic update, ANZ said it expects quarterly trimmed mean inflation to come in at 3.7 per cent for the June quarter, slightly below the Reserve Bank's forecast of 3.8 per cent. Importantly, the bank said that outcome, when combined with slowing economic activity, "supports our view that the cash rate has peaked".

The Reserve Bank has spent the better part of three years attempting to bring inflation under control through higher interest rates. If Australia's major banks are correct and rates have now peaked, the conversation shifts from how much higher rates could go to when they might begin coming down.

Westpac's caution comes from underlying inflation. The trimmed mean, the measure most closely watched by the Reserve Bank, increased from 3.4 per cent to 3.6 per cent annually. Housing inflation remains elevated at 6.5 per cent, reflecting ongoing increases in rents, electricity costs and new dwelling construction.

Electricity prices remain particularly problematic, rising 21.1 per cent over the past year following the removal of government rebates.

Housing construction costs are also showing signs of renewed pressure. ANZ noted new dwelling costs rose 0.9 per cent in May and are now running at an annualised pace of 8.6 per cent over the past three months. Builders continue to face higher labour, fuel and material costs, a reminder that inflationary pressures have not completely disappeared.

Housing affordability has deteriorated largely because of higher interest rates rather than higher property prices alone. Even modest reductions in mortgage rates would improve borrowing capacity, increase buyer confidence and reduce repayment pressure on existing homeowners.

While August is far from a certainty, the latest inflation result has strengthened the view that the next move in rates is more likely to be down than up. For borrowers, buyers and the development sector, that alone represents a significant shift from the conversation that dominated much of the past two years.

Sydney’s property market is known for high prices, competitive bidding, and mounting pressure on first home buyers. But change is on the horizon.

From late 2025, eligible first home buyers in New South Wales will have access to a new federal government initiative aimed at addressing affordability: the Help to Buy Scheme.&nbsp;

<h2>What is the Help to Buy Scheme?</h2>

The program introduces a shared equity model intended to reduce the upfront cost of entering the property market, particularly in high-demand urban areas such as Sydney.

The scheme operates under a shared ownership structure in which the federal government takes an equity stake of up to 40 per cent for new homes, or 30 per cent for existing dwellings. This arrangement allows eligible buyers to significantly reduce their loan size and avoid the added cost of Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI).

Under this model, purchasers can enter the property market with as little as a two per cent deposit, well below the traditional 10 to 20 per cent usually required. The government’s contribution is not a loan but a co-ownership stake in the property. As such, there is no interest or rent charged on its portion.

Because the government’s equity combined with the buyer’s deposit typically meets or exceeds the 20 per cent threshold, LMI does not apply. The remaining balance, generally between 60 and 70 per cent of the property’s value, is financed through a standard home loan with a participating lender.

The government's equity in the property remains in place until the buyer chooses to repay it voluntarily or until the property is sold. Buyers can buy back the government’s share over time, in increments of at least five per cent, depending on their financial situation.

There is no fixed repayment timeline, but the amount to be repaid will be based on the property's market value at the time of repayment, not the original purchase price.

<h2>How do you qualify for the&nbsp;Help to Buy Scheme?</h2>

To qualify for the Help to Buy Scheme, applicants must meet the following conditions:

	<li>Be an Australian citizen at least 18 years of age.</li>
	<li>Be a first-home buyer who does not currently own property.</li>
	<li>Intend to live in the property as their primary residence.</li>
	<li>Earn less than $100,000 per year for individuals, or $160,000 for couples.</li>

Sydney-based developer, Coronation Property Co, has announced the acquisition of its latest western Sydney site in Merrylands Court, Merrylands.
Situated at 52-54 McFarlane Street, the 12,418 sqm site sits in the heart of the Merrylands town centre, adjacent to one of Stockland’s top-performing shopping centres.
Acquired from Stockland for $41 million, the site is currently DA-approved for the construction of five high-density towers that will comprise 562 residential apartments, as well as approximately 4,500 sqm of ground level retail and basement parking.

Coronation Property acquire $41 million Merrylands residential site

Implosion is the most dramatic way of demolishing a building but it’s also the most wasteful and hazardous.
We are entering a new world where skyscrapers and other huge buildings are becoming redundant and need significant overhaul or replacement. The process is called unbuilding or, if you’re a bit highfalutin, deconstruction.
These so-called <a href="https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/spreadsheets-in-the-sky-are-putting-melbourne-s-liveability-at-risk-20191203-p53gek" target="_blank">spreadsheet towers</a> populate every major city. They signalled modernity and provided huge profits for those who built them. But these buildings are <a href="/news">profligate users of fuels</a> for light, power and services.
Most developed world cities started building skyscrapers after the second world war. These buildings were <a href="https://www.britannica.com/art/International-Style-architecture" target="_blank">International Style</a> architecture, unrecognisable is terms of a particular locale, universal in terms of their ubiquitous metal, concrete, glass – and fully air-conditioned. Now they are ageing, their use-by date is up and their balance sheet profitability no longer attracts.
The challenges of demolition and reuse
The question is: how do we safely dismantle these high-rise structures, which are generally located in busy cities?
Reminders of the dangers of explosive demolition are tragedies such as the <a href="https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6030620/katie-benders-family-commemorate-20-years-since-royal-canberra-hospital-implosion/" target="_blank">death of 12-year-old Katie Bender</a>. She was struck by flying debris when the Royal Canberra Hospital was razed in 1997 to make way for the new National Museum of Australia.
A recent demolition, and the <a href="https://www.archdaily.com/889563/soms-iconic-270-park-avenue-at-risk-of-becoming-the-largest-building-ever-to-be-demolished">tallest ever to be unbuilt</a>, is 270 Park Avenue, New York City (pictured). Its 52 floors were built in 1960 for the Union Carbide chemical company. The building was for 50 years the tallest ever designed by a female architect (Natalie de Bios of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Is that another low hit for gender equality?) Its replacement by architects Norman Foster will be <a href="/news">twice as high</a>.
The business of disassembling these skyscrapers is just now developing, but it will gain pace as more become obsolete.
Some still get imploded, but usually, in a busy city, demolition techniques must be unobtrusive, as quiet and clean as possible. The <a href="https://www.propertyobserver.com.au/https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780865476752">techniques used for cleaning up the World Trade Centre</a> testify to the wastefulness of a more destructive approach.
So how best to demolish a high-rise building?
Plenty of <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/18/science/tricky-ways-to-pull-down-a-skyscraper">clever techniques to demolish</a> exist. Some start at the base and work up, others in reverse.
The 40-storey Akasaka Prince Hotel in Tokyo was slowly <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/article/1160452/eco-friendly-japanese-demolition-scheme-slashes-dust-and-noise">demolished in 2012-13</a> using a technique where a cap was built on top of the building. It was stripped floor by floor as the cap was lowered, so all the dust, mess and debris was contained and removed with no effect on the environment.
Buildings are wrapped in scaffold and protective fabric then literally dismantled in the reverse order to which they were built. In the process building waste can be recycled and reused rather than dumped.
Reverse building involves removing the glass, then the frames, taking off the wall cladding, then scraping away at the concrete and steel frames bit by bit. Concrete is removed to expose the steel reinforcing bars, which are then separately removed and recycled. In the process unwanted material can be uncovered, like asbestos, which needs particular care in handling.
Interiors are unbuilt the same way – remove floor coverings, cupboards, doors and lightweight walls, strip the electrical wiring and pipes, take out air conditioning and lifts, remove stairs and escalators.
These removalists act smartly, as materials and fabric are recycled and often reused for another building. It is a sustainable way of dealing with the issue. Things that might normally have been reduced to dust and mud by destruction are instead usefully salvaged and recovered for an extended life cycle.
As part of the benefits of this procedure, unbuilding provides <a href="https://www.huduser.gov/Publications/PDF/deconstruct.pdf">large numbers of construction jobs and associated employment</a> in transportation, waste management and recycling.
It also provides new construction sites. This means cities need not expand beyond existing boundaries and the infrastructure of services, roads and public transport need not be extended.
Building with an eye to unbuilding
What has interested those involved with this work is the capacity of building designers (let’s call them architects) to creatively improve their buildings in terms of life after use-by date. Techniques are being developed that assist in unbuilding and salvaging materials, even down to basic principles such as ease of access to pipes and wires, modular components and simplified connection practices.
The logic is that clarity of building structure and services makes retrieval simpler. Less complexity of materials and components means a building can be untangled more efficiently.
Fastening devices can be simplified and mechanical (rather than using glues and sealants), toxic materials avoided, materials selected with an afterlife in mind and structures designed for simplicity and accessibility. Also important is a clear set of as-built documents that map the original building so it can be disassembled.
Clear design thinking will have value for unbuilding and recycling in the future.
Making construction more sustainable
The construction industry is a main consumer of fuels, timber, steel and other metals, concrete and plastics. That demand drives the logging of forests, mining and extraction, leading to material production and transport that contributes to emissions and pollution.
The UK Green Building Council <a href="https://www.ukgbc.org/climate-change/">estimates</a> the construction industry generates about 22% of UK carbon emissions, uses 40% of drinking water, contributes 50% to climate change and over half our landfill waste, and accounts for 39% of global energy use. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also <a href="https://archive.epa.gov/greenbuilding/web/pdf/gbstats.pdf">reports</a> that the industry contributes to asthma and lung cancer by producing radon via contaminated applied finishes (paint).

Metrics anticipate the Australian commercial property loan market outlook for 2020.
Non-bank lender activity in the Australia property loan market is forecast to expand further in 2020, driven by increased interest from both developers as well as investors
The Australian non-bank loan market has been an essential source of funding for Australian property developers and investors for decades, but when compared to more developed markets such as the US and Europe, it still has significant potential for expansion.
There are currently a number of structural and cyclical trends playing out in the market that will see it grow in the coming years, notes the nation’s leading non-bank lender Metrics Credit Partners (Metrics).
Non-bank lenders to provide a greater share
One of the hallmarks of the Australian corporate lending market has been the bank dominance of the sector, with the domestic banks currently holding around 70% market share. Due to the large balance sheet capacity and accompanying capital required to operate in the market, barriers to entry are significant.
However, “banks are under significant regulatory pressure to reign in their loan portfolios to meet stricter capital requirements, which has opened up opportunities for non-bank lenders to claim a greater share of the &gt;$900 billion market." notes managing partner at Metrics, Andrew Lockhart.
“For this reason, expect the proportion of non-bank lenders to grow modestly over the coming year.”
Mr Lockhart adds that institutional capital is also driving this corporate loan growth. “The asset class is a key component in institutional portfolios, particularly for those seeking income-producing assets at a time of low yields, and over 80 per cent of managers expect to raise more capital from pension funds and insurance companies in the near future.
“Outside of the institutions, however, there is also significant interest in investing in corporate loans from Australian retail and self-managed superfund investors, drawn by the attractive risk-adjusted returns of four to ten per cent on offer.”
Given continued uncertainty for equities markets resulting from geopolitical issues and the ‘lower for longer’ rate environment impacting cash and term deposits, this is a trend expected to continue into 2020.
Mr Lockhart notes that raising capital for property developments can be a long and expensive process. “The property sector is an attractive opportunity to build a relationship with a lender, rather than relying on commoditised lending products offered by the banks.
“Given the pullback in bank funding in Australia, along with the appetite we are seeing from borrowers of all sizes for alternative sources of funding, we could well see more sizeable transactions in the Australian market in the years to come.”

Australian property loan market outlook for 2020, Metrics report

The owners of three adjoining Melbourne commercial buildings have opted to take them to the market together following a strong 2019 Melbourne office market.
They have reported $75 million hopes.
They recently received a major planning permit across the combined site which allows for a hotel and mixed-use development project.
The property, comprising around 30,000 sqm of buildable area, is expected to attract the attention of larger domestic and international development groups.
CBRE Melbourne Middle Markets agents Mark Wizel, Josh Rutman, Lewis Tong and Scott Orchard are offering the properties either in one line or separately. 
Hotelier Aziz “Ozzie” Kheir, Prebuilt founder Phil Merton and developer Frank Palazzo did have hotel plans.
The largest of the asset is the former Sands &amp; McDougall building at 355 Spencer Street (pictured above). 
The historic 7,363sqm corner office building once housed Melbourne’s leading printing and publishing firm for well over a century.
Sands &amp; McDougall was best known for its annual Directory of Melbourne publication – a near encyclopaedic book that captured the identity and address of every business in Melbourne – which ran from 1862 to 1974. The company’s main printing house was located within the building and the proud horse logo still adorns the façade. 
Mark Wizel said the repositioning and rejuvenation of older character buildings has become extremely lucrative in recent years, and this asset is perfectly placed to capture unsatisfied tenant demand for unique, but well-located, accommodation.
“With office vacancy at record lows and the residential market also showing strong signs of recovery, there’s little wonder why investors are showing such strong appetite for buildings in and around the Melbourne CBD,” Wizel added.
In a similar transaction of a heritage building in late 2019, 22 William Street, known as Swann House, sold for $52,000,000 which will see the buyer embark on a refurbishment program, targeting rents of over $700/sqm.

Three adjoining Melbourne office buildings to attract investors and occupiers

La Trobe Financial established a Disaster Relief Package which will pay loan interest and charges for 12 months for those who lost their homes to the bushfires.
They will also provide access to interest-free loans to help cover any gap between insurance payouts and the cost of rebuilding, and allow fee-free withdrawals from investments in the La Trobe Australian Credit Fund.
La Trobe Financial President &amp; CEO Greg O’Neill OAM says: “true to our philosophy of others before self, we are determined to look out for our customers and offer meaningful support to those affected through this very challenging time.”
For other customers experiencing hardship because of the bushfires, La Trobe Financial will defer loan repayments for up to 12 months, help with finance on discounted terms to cover property repair costs or support a small business, and make it easier to access investments in the La Trobe Australian Credit Fund without incurring fees.
For customers who are volunteer firefighters, La Trobe Financial will also offer financial help including deferral of home loan repayments for up to six months.
The Disaster Relief Package is in addition to La Trobe Financial’s recent $1 million donation to assist people affected by the bushfires across Australia.
The donation was split between The Salvation Army Disaster Appeal and the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund.

La Trobe Financial to pay loan interest for homes lost in the bushfires for a year

Lending to households building and purchasing new homes remained soft in November, with construction loans sliding 8.4 per cent, according to figures released from the ABS.
The seasonally adjusted figures saw first home buyer loans decline 0.9 per cent over the month, but remain 3.4 per cent up over the year.
HIA senior economist Georgan Murray said the weakness in construction lending in November is largely a legacy of the soft sales volumes that home builders were experiencing during the first half of the year.

"As conditions in the broader housing market recovered during the second half of 2019 lending to households purchasing established homes improved", Murray said.
"Lending to owner-occupiers purchasing established homes held steady in November, recording 0.1 per cent increase."
Despite the decline in lending to new homes, there was more positive news for the value of new home loans.
The value of new housing loan commitments rose again in November, up 1.6 per cent to take the annual gains to 10 per cent.

There was a further increase of investor activity, with a 2.2 per cent increase in value of home loans written for investors, however they are still 3.2 per cent down on the year.
The figure is around 10 per cent higher than the lowest point registered earlier in the year.
Despite the number of first home buyer loans declining 0.9 per cent, the value of loans for first home buyers rose by 2.1 per cent to be nearly 20 per cent up on the year as the market bounces back from its June low.
Paul Marshall, chief executive of RateCity.com.au, said first home buyers were taking the bull by the horns.
“First home buyers have made a comeback in the past year, with close to 20 per cent more borrowing compared to the year before, as the stars aligned for them,” he said. 
“Three RBA rate cuts, a housing market that had lost some steam, and changes to serviceability increased the borrowing capacity for some people – a perfect storm for first homebuyers.
“November saw the highest level of new borrowing on record since October 2009 – around the same time the governments’ first home owner boost ended.
“While we haven’t returned to the peak of first home buyer levels, we’re likely to see more buyers continue to surge into the market this year, particularly helped along by the first home loan deposit scheme,” Marshall said.

Fewer homes will be built over the coming year, and that is to be expected following the frenetic pace of building over 2014-2018.
But there will be no shortage of work for the broader building and construction sectors.
Over $140 billion of work is yet to be done.
Commercial building work to be completed is at record highs with engineering work near 4-year highs. And that doesn’t include the raft of new infrastructure planned by state and territory governments.
Rebuilding after the horrific bushfires will add to the work total as well in coming years.
While off the absolute peak levels in 2012 – a total driven by mining activity – work yet to be done on building and construction projects is up almost 4 per cent over the year and near the highest levels in 4½ years.
There is a perception that the economy is listing. But building and construction remains a bevy of activity and there is plenty of work to support building material providers, builders, tradespeople and professional services like architects. Outside the resources sector, a record amount of engineering work remains to be done.
What do the figures show?
The number of dwelling starts fell by 11.7 per cent in the September quarter after rising 1.5 per cent in the June quarter.
House starts fell by 4.8 per cent in the September quarter after a 9.4 per cent fall in the June quarter. Apartment starts fell by 21.9 per cent in the September quarter after a 20.3 per cent increase in the June quarter.
Work started on 180,972 new dwellings over the 12 months to September, down by 21.5 per cent on the year. Starts fell from the record high of 234,186 dwellings in the year to December 2016.
Across Australia, starts in the September quarter fell in six states/territories: NSW (down by 19.5 per cent); Victoria (down by 9.7 per cent); Queensland (up by 3.0 per cent); South Australia (up by 1.9 per cent); Western Australia (down by 14.8 per cent); Tasmania (down by 4.6 per cent); Northern Territory (down by 18.5 per cent); and the ACT (down by 3.1 per cent).
In the year to September, dwelling starts were higher than the decade average in only two of the states and territories: NSW (up 7.6 per cent) and Tasmania (up 17.0 per cent). Starts were below the decade average in: Victoria (down 0.2 per cent); Queensland (down 13.6 per cent); South Australia (down by 9.1 per cent); Western Australia (down by 35.4 per cent); Northern Territory (down 60.9 per cent); the ACT (down 7.6 per cent); and total Australia (down 5.9 per cent).
In the September quarter residential and commercial building work done fell by 0.5 per cent. New residential work fell 3.4 per cent with alterations &amp; additions down 0.3 per cent but commercial building rose by 3.8 per cent and engineering work rose by 0.5 per cent.
The value of residential and commercial building work in the pipeline stood at $89.6 billion at the end of September, down by 7.1 per cent on a year ago and below the record-high of $99.2 billion at the end of June 2018.
Across Australia, 201,317 homes are currently being built, down from a record 231,416 homes in March 2018.
In the September quarter residential and commercial building work yet to be done (completed), stood at $69.8 billion, down 7.9 per cent on a year ago. Engineering work to be done stood at $74.1 billion, up 18.1 per cent on a year ago. Total building and construction work to be done stood at $144 billion at the end of September, just off 4½-year highs but up 3.9 per cent on the year.
What are the implications for interest rates and investors?
Building and construction sectors face mixed prospects. Work to be done on commercial projects stands at record highs. Engineering work is near 5-year highs but dwelling construction is easing from unsustainable highs.
When the word ‘decline’ or ‘fall’ is used, the perception is negative. But always the base needs to be considered as well as history. While some construction work levels have eased, in many sectors the decline is from super-normal or unsustainable levels. In NSW at the peak more than 70,000 apartments were being built. Prior to the last five years, a number of 25,000 apartments being built was considered a high level of building.
The healthy levels of construction work to be done provides further complications for the Reserve Bank in its thinking about rates at the February 2020 Board meeting. The next two key events are the December job figures on January 23 and the Consumer Price Index (inflation) on January 29.
