There's a chance the world's tallest timber-framed building will be constructed in Sweden's Stockholm.

Its one of three shortlisted proposals in a housing design competition.
Its a 34-storey wooden skyscraper by architects C.F. Miller, Dinell Johansson, and consultant Tyrens which gives a vision of future housing that would be cheaper, easier and more sustainable than typical steel and concrete constructions.

C. F. Møller architect Ola Jonsson told Dezeen "the building industry has started taking responsibity for the environment."
According to Jonsson, using wood could even be a cheaper alternative, as it is a lighter material that costs far less to transport. It is also more fire-resistant than steel or concrete.

"We have a long history of building wooden structures in Sweden," he explains.
If built, the 34-storey building would exceed the height of Lend Lease’s timber Docklands development Forté (pictured below), the tallest timber residential building in the world.

The $11 million project makes use of the lightweight cross-laminated timber (CLT), commonly used in Europe, which has a structural strength similar to concrete and steel.
There are be 23 apartments in the 32-metre, 10-storey building. Prices start from $435,000 for a 59-square-metre one-bedroom apartment, climbing to the high $600,000s for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom pad, with the penthouses reaching $795,000.
Construction of the building was quieter, more efficient, faster and safer than construction with more traditional materials.
There was also <a href="https://www.waughthistleton.com/project.php?name=murray" target="_blank">the nine-storey Murray Grove tower in London</a>, as well as a proposed 20-storey tower in Vancouver by architect <a href="https://mg-architecture.ca/" target="_blank">Michael Green</a> and a Swedish tower approved at 30 floors.
The winning entry in the competition, organised by Swedish building society HSB Stockholm, is scheduled for in 2023 to coincide with the organisation's 100th birthday.

Stockholm aims for the world's tallest timber-framed building but Melbourne's Forté on secure footing until 2023

Fortuna Villa, one of Bendigo's finest heritage-listed estates, is set for new ownership and restoration having sold post-auction for $2.21 million to the underbidder, adman Paul Banks.
The $3 million auction price was fool's gold, as it was never settled by its mystery buyer.
With a Pompeii fountain, parade ground, coach house, stables and, the seven bedroom mansion, the estate dates back to George Lansell who was the gold-rush town's quartz king.
It went to April auction when listed by the Defence Department whose signals section had taken up occupancy in the 1940s.
But its $3 million auctipn sale fell through.
Paul Banks, the advertising and marketing company owner will now endeavour to have the property rezoned to allow its utlisation by members of the public.
“Once we get a lick of paint on it we can get it opened up for functions, put a couple of bathrooms in it here and there and open it up for boutique style accommodation,” he told the Bendigo Advertiser.
Mr Banks has secured the property for about $2.21 million, a substantial discount to the $3 million April auction price, when the local press speculated it had sold to Chinese interests. 
Paul Banks, who runs <a target="_blank" href="https://www.regionalreach.com/index.php">Regional Reach Advertising </a>at Sutton Grange, was an April auction underbidder. 
It was on the market at $1.75 million when <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.tsfn.com.au/?pagecall=property&amp;propertyID=2199224">Fortuna Villa</a> was being sold by the Department of Defence through Tweed Sutherland First National.
The quartz king, George Lansell, a mining entrepreneur, was the director of 38 mines and had links to almost every mine in Bendigo.
He struck fortune with his purchase of the 180 mine, part of the New Chum Reef.
He remodelled the mansion in the late 1880 which was lavishly furnished with pieces collected from around the globe. He designed the spacious gardens with walks, lakes and imported plants.
The Villa is built in a number of architectural styles - Victorian Italianate and Victorian Free Classical, with Federation influences.
The heritage listed rendered brick construction comes with seven bathrooms, cast-iron verandahs, a billiard room, a ballroom, a conservatory, a reception room and entrance hall.
It has a stained glass, cedar and blackwood staircase, a solid marble bath, extensive acid-etched glasswork.
The villa comes on 7.57 hectares and has 32 outbuildings. The Victorian gardens include a roman bath and a Pompeii fountain. There is also a tennis court, coach house and a large lake on the property. The lake was previously a tailings pond.

The department of defence built a number of modern buildings on the property including a mess hall, stores and accommodation.

Bendigo's Fortuna Villa heritage trophy estate finally sells

Melbourne’s housing market has risen since the Easter holiday period, with auction clearance rates on the rise over April and May, according to Australian Property Monitors.
Auction listing numbers also rose over this period, with more than 700 extra properties offered for auction compared to the same period a year ago.
"This indicates that seller-confidence is on the rise in a market that continues to perform at three-year highs," Dr Andrew Wilson, the APM senior economist said.
The Melbourne market has been sustained by upper-price, inner-city home sales, although a more general pattern of buyer activity is emerging.
Middle-ring, mid-price range suburbs, particularly to the east of the city have attracted increased buyer activity.
Changes to the first home owners grant, announced by the local state government, will impact on the Melbourne market, as buyers rush to take advantage of the grant for established home purchases before it expires on the 30th June.
"The local Melbourne economy does however remain under a cloud, with the announcement of job cuts, particularly in the manufacturing industry contributing to the highest unemployment rate of the mainland capitals, which was at 6.2 percent in April," Dr Wilson said..

Melbourne market sustained by upper-price, inner-city home sales: APM

No need for Julia and Tim to depart The Lodge immediately.
The renewed Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and wife Therese Rein could possibly bunk down nearby as they have yet to sell their their home in leafy Yarralumla, Canberra which cost $2.175 million in 2010.
It could even serve as his temporary bolthole, if after a suprise Federal election win, he decided to undertake the requisite renovations needs at The Lodge. 
It was listed for sale at $2.25 million through Shane Killalea of the Peter Blackshaw agency last month, but remains for sale.

“The current tenants have indicated they would like to purchase another house and therefore it is an appropriate time to put the put the house on the market,” a spokesperson for Kevin Rudd said. The tenants vacated the home earlier this month.
The five-bedroom, four bathroom house is set on 936 square metres with a separate study, in-built sound system and pool.
While Yarralumla’s median house price is up over the past year by 7% to $1.07 million, according to RP Data Canberra’s housing market has slowed due to inpart to uncertainty around public service employment after the September federal election.
There is typically <a href="/news">a required 11.7% discount </a>among private treaty listings to secure a sale.

Kevin Rudd yet to sell Yarralumla, Canberra bolthole

The Dirty Deeds filmmaker Deborah Balderstone and her husband, John, an investment manager, have relisted their 1890s Elizabeth Bay villa. Its listed for August 1 auction.

It initially had&nbsp;price hopes of more than $12.5 million&nbsp;last year through Richardson &amp; Wrench Elizabeth Bay agents Jason Boon and Geoff Cox, who now have it inconjunction with Michael Finger and Diane Wilson at Ray White Double&nbsp;Bay. The latest campaign comes with $12 million plus hopes.

Hidden from the street by a high wall within gardens designed by William Dangar, it&#39;s on Billyard Avenue non-waterfront block, although it comes with shared jetty access.

There&#39;s been a William Smart redesign to the five-bedroom house in <a href="/news">Elizabeth Bay</a>.

The Balderstones bought the property for $6.8 million in 2003 from property entrepreneur Barry Wain.

It was unrenovated when sold by the veteran mining speculator Boris Ganke to Wain.

Title Tattle recalls the house was sold off by the Sydney City Council in 1971 for $133,000 to Boris Ganke after plans for a park were abandoned.

Jeremyville artist sells Rex, Potts Point trophy penthouse

The Longrain restaurant premises sold at auction this month for $5.3 million.
The 1020-square-metre heritage building traded 10 years ago for $3.8 million.
Based on the annual rental of $290,000, the two-level former William Anglis stables building sold on a yield of about 5.4% through CVA Property Consultants.
Its been reported redevelopment of airspace above the Chinatown premises could be a possible consideration although the restraurant has a long lease.
Longrain has operated from the building since 2005.
With leasing options, Longrain could remain until 2035.
The Little Bourke Street, Melbourne building that accommodates Longrain Restaurant has been listed with $4.75 million expectations.
There's a 1022-square-metre building on the 511 square metre holding. It has face red brick with a gabled roof, terminated by an elegant parapet.
The 1900 building was once the Angliss &amp; Co stables for the butcher William Angliss.
William Angliss opened his first butcher shop in North Carlton in 1886, before moving to larger premises in Bourke Street in 1892.
Angliss went on to establish a vast empire of pastoral stations and was a dominant force in the local meat and frozen meat export trade, which was centered on his Imperial Freezing Works at Footscray, opened in 1905.
The Bourke Street premises, which operated as a butchers shop, remained the headquarters for Angliss throughout his career.
Heritage Victoria notes in order to provide accommodation for horses and vehicles used in the delivery of meat to city customers, in 1900 Angliss built the substantial two-storied brick stables in Little Bourke Street, close to the rear of his Bourke Street premises.
"Carts and wagons were parked on the ground floor and horses ascended to the first floor via a ramp.
"The first floor had accommodation for about 45 horses. It was claimed afternoon sightseers gathered daily to watch the horses as they were unharnessed and safely mounted up the incline."
Longrain founding chef Martin Boetz is leaving the Sydney and Melbourne restaurants at the end of June to work his farm on the Hawkesbury River, and his Cooks' Co-op produce business and set up a cooking school for professionals. The 10-hectare Sackville property cost $780,000 in 2011.

Longrain, Little Bourke Street, Melbourne premises fetch $5.3 million

The Sydney housing market continued to strengthen through May with auction clearance rates rising to near-record levels, according to Australian Property Monitors.
The auction clearance rate for units of 74.9% was second only to the 76.3% recorded in May 2002.
Similarly, the auction clearance rate for houses of 65.3% was the fourth highest May recorded over the last 23 years, behind only 2001, 2002 and 2003.
"Sydney is now clearly the best performing local economy, with an unemployment rate of 4.9% in April, the lowest of all the major capitals," APM senior economist Dr Andrew Wilson.
He said other leading indicators of economic activity such as retail sales, also positioned Sydney as a leading economic performer.
The report noted investors and mid-range upgraders were currently highly active in Sydney, with both the first home buyer market and the prestige market remaining relatively subdued.
Sydney’s inner west region and upper north shore remain particularly popular with buyers.

Sydney unit market at near record auction sales strength: APM housing market report

The Sydney wildlife attraction Featherdale Wildlife Park has been sold to the boutique investment house, Moss Capital.
Its a deal estimated at $15?million, according to the Australian Financial Review.
The wildlife park on Sydney’s north-western fringes set over almost three hectares in Doonside near Blacktown was sold by the listed hotels and resorts group, Amalgamated Holdings.
The attraction will be managed by the Anthology Collection whose niche tourism experience portfolio includes the Wildman Wilderness Lodge in the Northern Territory.
Marianne Ossovani, executive director of Moss Capital’s hotels and tourism division said Featherdale’s strong cash flow generating capacity was the key drawcard.
CBRE Hotels associate director Andrew Jackson brokered the deal between the two companies associated with well known property veterans Alan Rydge and Bill Moss.
Amalgamated Holdings – the owner of Rydges Hotels and Resorts, Thredbo ski resort and Greater Union cinemas – had held the property since December 1996.
The land was originally purchased by Charles and Marjorie Wigg in 1953. The Wigg’s son-in-law, Bruce Kubbere studied Australian fauna from early childhood and Featherdale opened to the public as a wildlife park in 1972. In the early years Bruce, and his wife Margaret, operated a plant nursery in conjunction with the Wildlife Park so beautiful Australian native trees and plants line the walkways. Featherdale’s future was threatened in 1975 with plans to use the property for a housing commission development.
The then Premier, Sir Robert Askin was presented with thousands of signed petitions convincing the government to rescind its original decision.

The apartment mix will cater to a broad range of buyers, with 65 studio and one-bedroom apartments, 139 two-bedroom residences, 35 three-bedroom apartments, 48 four-bedroom homes, and nine penthouses. Residents will have access to a dedicated amenity level on Level 33, featuring a swimming pool with views towards the Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and North Sydney CBD, as well as a gym, library, shared kitchen, lounge and outdoor entertaining areas.

The hotel will occupy the lower six levels of the building and include meeting and function spaces, a wellness centre with gym, yoga studio, swimming pool and sauna, further strengthening North Sydney's growing hospitality offering.

At ground level, the development has been designed to improve pedestrian connections through the precinct. More than 700 sqm of retail space will activate the street frontage, while a landscaped through-site link connecting Walker Street, Little Walker Street and Doris Fitton Park will provide new public open space with seating, paving and extensive native landscaping.

Freecity Group Co-Founder and Joint CEO Tony Sun said the project represents one of the most significant development opportunities currently available in North Sydney.

"This is one of the most significant development sites in North Sydney and it comes at a pivotal moment for the precinct," Sun said.

"North Sydney is undergoing a genuine transformation, and this project will contribute housing the city urgently needs while creating a landmark destination."

Executive Director of Development Michael Romano said demand for both residential and hotel accommodation would continue to strengthen as the Metro precinct matures.

"The structural demand for high-quality housing and hotel accommodation in North Sydney is compelling, and will only grow as the precinct continues to evolve around the new Metro station," Romano said.

Architectus has designed the tower, orientating the apartments to maximise views towards Sydney Harbour while introducing a sculpted façade intended to respond to light, wind and the surrounding skyline.

Architectus Principal Marko Damic said the design sought to create a tower that contributes to the public realm as much as the skyline.

"We wanted to design a tower that doesn't just sit in the skyline but actively participates and contributes to city life," Damic said.
