In the 1930s the Old Burleigh Theatre was a popular cinema and dance hall.

The Goodwin Terrace building is now set to start its new life as a mixed-use development, with the Sydney-based developers Weiya Holdings receiving sign off from the Gold Coast Council to create a new local hotspot.

The development will be the first ever adaptive re-use of a building with heritage elements on the Gold Coast.

Weiya Holdings Managing Director Wei Wang said they are looking forward to bringing Burleigh Heads the innovative project.

“It’s been a long road to get here but we are extremely grateful for the feedback from community that allowed us to devise a truly unique design that maintains that connection to the community while providing sought-after residences on one of the Gold Coasts’ most coveted beachfronts,” Mr Wang said.

Sales are set to launch in the coming weeks for the residential component of the building, the 13-level apartment tower dubbed De-Luxe, named as a nod to the building's former life. 

That will sit above the existing two storey volume, which will home a street front retail arcade with modern cafe and retail tenancies.

There will be 30 apartments designed by the Brisbane-based architecture firm Conrad Gargett, who specialise in heritage restoration.

Conrad Gargett director John Flynn said the project is exceptionally unique.

"It's unlike anything we've ever seen on the Gold Coast", Flynn says.

“The adaptive reuse of heritage elements aligns De-Luxe’s design approach with matured planning schemes employed across some of the world’s biggest cities, which is an incredible accolade to be bringing to Burleigh.

“It’s difficult to get the cohesion between historic architecture and modern amenity just right, but I believe it’s a balance we’ve managed to strike with the design of De-Luxe.”

Traces of the building’s history will be woven throughout the redeveloped structure, including a colonnade of brick piers on the podium’s western façade and public ground floor space showcasing snapshots and motion picture screen detailing the theatre’s history and models highlighting the many phases of the building’s life.

Patrick Pancur, sales and marketing manager from Weiya Holdings, has been appointed to market the project.
