Advanced Choice Finance Pty Ltd (ACF), a former Melbourne based mortgage brokerage company, has been charged with one count of knowingly making a false statement in a credit licence annual compliance certificate lodged with ASIC.  Mr Ding Yang, director of ACF, has also been charged with aiding and abetting ACF in making the false statement.

ACF held an Australian credit licence and Mr Yang was the sole fit and proper person and responsible manager on the licence.

ASIC alleges that in or about July 2012 Mr Yang had his lender accreditation with the Bank of Melbourne terminated, and in April 2016 Mr Yang and ACF had their membership with aggregator Connective OSN Pty Ltd terminated. It is alleged that in January 2017 Mr Yang, on behalf of ACF, completed and lodged a credit licence annual compliance certificate with ASIC in which he falsely certified that none of ACF’s fit and proper people had their accreditation cancelled by a lender or their membership with an aggregator terminated.

The alleged offense pertains to section 225(3) of the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009.

The cancellation of ACF’s credit licence was effective from 14 August 2019. Mr Yang’s banning is recorded on <a href="https://asic.gov.au/online-services/search-asics-registers/banned-and-disqualified/">ASIC’s Banned and Disqualified Persons Register</a>.

The matter has been adjourned to 3 February 2021 for pleas to be heard in the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

The combined capital cities are expected to see auction activity ramp up over the week, with a total of 2,593 properties set to go under the hammer, according to CoreLogic data. This week’s scheduled volumes are 24% higher than last week’s final figures which saw 2,085 auctions held. Plus this time last year, a higher 2,804 homes were taken to auction across the combined capitals.

There are over 1,000 homes set to be taken to auction across each of Australia’s two largest auction markets this week. Melbourne is expected to be the busier of the two with 1,153 properties scheduled for auction, an increase of 28% on last week. Sydney isn’t far behind with a total of 1,037 auctions scheduled to take place, an expected rise of almost 20%.

While activity across Melbourne has certainly bounced back from the lows seen throughout most of the second half of the year, volumes are still below 2019 levels with 1,405 homes taken to auction over the same week last year. Meanwhile one year ago in Sydney, volumes were lower at 875.

The remaining smaller markets are all expected to see a rise in activity over the week, with Brisbane set to be the busiest of the smaller cities with 147 auctions scheduled to take place. This is followed by Canberra (115), Adelaide (101), Perth (36) and Tasmania (4).

One example of a property headed to auction in Melbourne this weekend is an apartment at 705/547-551 Flinders Lane. The one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment in Docklands sits on the top floor of Morgan Place. It goes to auction with a guide of between $291,000 and $320,000.

Plans to slash travel times for drivers and public transport commuters in Sydney’s north have taken a major step forward with the Beaches Link Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) released today. 

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the mega-project will include twin tunnels under Middle Harbour with three lanes in each direction, allowing commuters to avoid peak hour congestion on the Spit Bridge, Military Road and the Roseville Bridge. 

“Beaches Link will transform the way people move to and from the Northern Beaches, bypassing 19 sets of traffic lights through The Spit, Mosman and Neutral Bay and help save up to 56 minutes between Dee Why and Sydney airport,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Residents in Neutral Bay, Mosman and Cremorne are set to benefit from the new tunnels, with less congestion and noise and traffic volumes expected to reduce by around a third along Spit Road.

Ms Berejiklian says the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link program is expected to support around 15,000 full-time jobs.

Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said the project will integrate with new and existing public transport connections.

“There will be the opportunity for new express bus services to key centres including St Leonards, Macquarie Park, North Sydney and Sydney CBD, and direct access to North Sydney to interchange with the new Sydney Metro,” Mr Constance said.

“We’re also planning more than five kilometres of new cycle and pedestrian pathways, including links to the Northern Beaches Hospital precinct.

“This is the next stage of the consultation process, giving the community another opportunity to have its say.

The tunnel will be up to 108 metres in depth (approximately 33 storeys) and include new connections on the Gore Hill Freeway at Artarmon, Warringah Freeway at Cammeray and direct access onto Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation at Balgowlah and Wakehurst Parkway at Seaforth.

The Wakehurst Parkway will be widened from one lane to two in each direction between Seaforth and Frenchs Forest.

<html><body>Consumers across Australia are seeing faster download speeds, as retail service providers now deliver on average more than 94 per cent of plan speed in the busy evening with some monitored services regularly achieving higher speeds than expected by consumers, according to a new ACCC report.

The eleventh Measuring Broadband Australia (MBA) report, published today, shows that in October retail service providers (RSPs) achieved between 84.8 and 98.5 per cent of maximum plan speed across all plans across busy hours (7-11pm).

More than half of monitored NBN services achieved download speeds exceeding the maximum speeds specified in the retail plan description when averaged across all hours of the day.

“Speeds in the October test period were the highest we have seen for all monitored RSPs since the start of the MBA program,” ACCC chair Rod Sims said.

Fibre to the node (FTTN) connections, however, are still performing considerably lower than other connection technologies. The results show that consumers on FTTN connections who are paying for high speed 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps plans received around 10 and 20 per cent lower speeds than the maximum plan speed respectively, at any given time.

Towards the beginning of the pandemic there were grave concerns, given the growing working from home sector and binge-watching by the recently unemployed apartment dwellers, that many companies would not meet the mark on their plan projections.</body></html>

Almost a third (31%) of Australians are planning renovations in the next five years, with one in five (18%) already in the process or planning to complete within the next 12 months, according to the latest research from Westpac

On average, Australians plan to spend about $82,000 on renovations, with one in five (22%) planning to spend over $100,000. Mostly, renovators will fund their projects using their savings (73%).

Westpac found that the top reasons cited for renovating are because it’s more affordable than moving or buying a new house (27%), to adjust to changing home needs brought about by the pandemic (25%), and a desire to stay in the same area (24%). More than a quarter (28%) are renovating for reasons relating to the pandemic; one in ten (11%) are doing so to accommodate working from home more, and nearly one in five because they’ve had more time during the pandemic to think about home upgrades.

Two thirds (65%) of renovators also agree that COVID-19 restrictions have made them consider alterations to enhance them and their family’s living arrangements.

Half (51%) of renovators say they’ve been inspired by TV programs like The Block. With nine in ten (89%) agreeing renovations are good for increasing the value of their property, almost a quarter (23%) are undergoing renovations in preparation to sell in the future. Four in ten (43%) are also planning to either sell or rent out their home once restrictions have eased.

The most common renovations Australians plan to undertake are landscaping their backyard of garden (23%) or modernising a bathroom (21%) or kitchen (19%). A quarter (25%) plan to renovate outdoor areas like decking (13%) or entertaining space (12%).

<h2>STATE TRENDS</h2>

Homeowners in NSW/ACT (33%), West Australia (32%) and Victoria (30%) are most likely to be thinking about renovating in the next five years. Renovators in NSW and ACT are planning to spend the most on renovations ($93,427), while West Australians plan to spend the least ($41,458). Queenslanders (32%) are more than twice as likely to consider renovations important in preparation to sell than Victorians (15%) and South Australians (11%).

Victorians (16%) are twice as likely to be renovating to accommodate working from home more than those in New South Wales and ACT (8%). After extended time in lockdown, Victorians are also the most likely to be considering alterations that would make life at home for them and their family more comfortable because of restrictions (70%). Victorians have been the most inspired by programs like The Block to renovate of any state, the report found.

Researchers from UNSW Sydney’s City Futures Research Centre and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) have, in partnership with the Strata Community Association (NSW) have developed the 'Strata Rectification Guide.

The <a href="https://cityfutures.be.unsw.edu.au/research/projects/defect-rectification/">online tool provides helpful information</a> for property owners and strata managers to navigate the process of identifying, documenting, reporting and rectifying building defects in strata schemes.

While the NSW Government has introduced a suite of reforms to the multi-billion-dollar apartment building sector in the aftermath of Opal Tower, the guide complements these changes by focusing on consumers already in buildings impacted by defects.

Though the particular focus of the guide is defects in common property such as hallways and courtyards, it also covers all levels of defects and their severity.

Freeman said the interiors had been deliberately kept restrained to complement the scale, natural light and outlook already established by the architecture.

New Brisbane developer Dalcott has unveiled Marrone, the first of three residential projects it is planning in and around Browning Street in South Brisbane.

The project will sit in a quiet pocket of South Brisbane between South Bank and West End, close to the restaurants, cultural attractions and riverfront amenity that have driven the suburb's continued transformation.

Dalcott is targeting buyers looking for more space and amenity than has traditionally been offered in the inner-city apartment market, particularly downsizers and professionals wanting to remain close to the city.

Bathrooms will feature Nara Japanese ceramics and glass bricks, while clay, walnut and brass lighting will be used throughout the apartments.

Dalcott has appointed Realm Projects, led by Managing Director Shane Foley, to handle sales and marketing following previous sold-out collaborations between the groups.

Foley said the Brisbane apartment buyer had become increasingly focused on the quality of the home itself rather than simply securing an inner-city address.

Marrone will be the first project delivered as part of Dalcott's broader investment in the precinct.

It will be followed by La Terra, a boutique project comprising penthouse-style, single-level apartments on a northeast corner site with extensive resident amenity and city views.

Cottee said Marrone represented the first stage of the group's longer-term plans for the area.

Dalcott was established in 2025 by Lachlan Cottee and Ben Dalgliesh, combining development and construction capability under an integrated model and focusing on architecturally considered residential projects.

Marrone will initially be offered through a pre-release registration campaign ahead of its broader public launch.

Parnell Developments is the latest to seek significant uplift through the NSW Government's Housing Delivery Authority on a Strathfield site previously approved for a much smaller apartment development.

Parnell has sought approval for a 32-storey mixed use tower across&nbsp;<a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/7-lyons-street-strathfield-nsw-2135">3-7 Lyons Street and 18 Parnell Street</a>, a&nbsp;1,857 sqm site around 400 metres from Strathfield Station. The building would yield 160 apartments, 15 per cent of which will be dedicated affordable as per the government mandate for buildings seeking additional uplift.

Approved previously was a nine-storey building back in 2022 with just over 30 apartments. That approval came prior to the project being&nbsp;progressively reconsidered as planning policy shifted toward greater density around transport hubs.

Turner has designed the latest building that would replace&nbsp;existing detached homes across the four lots.

The apartment mix comprises 22 one-bedroom apartments, 107 two-bedroom and two-bedroom-plus configurations, and 31 apartments with three or more bedrooms. The scheme also includes 203 car spaces across six basement levels and 58 bicycle spaces.

The proposal has been designed around a three-storey podium addressing Lyons Street, with the tower rising above and stepping toward its upper levels.

Turner said the podium was deliberately scaled to respond to the existing street, while the taller element has been designed as part of the emerging skyline anticipated around Strathfield Town Centre and the wider Homebush transport-oriented development precinct.

The Lyons Street frontage would have a more active, pedestrian-focused character, incorporating the commercial tenancy, landscaping and a brick-framed podium with an awning.

Parnell Street, which faces the railway corridor, has been given a different architectural treatment, with double-height breeze blocks, landscaping and communal areas used to soften the interface with the rail infrastructure.

The tower itself uses curved and recessed facade elements, with wave-like indentations across the northern elevation breaking the building into three vertical forms.

A palette of grey concrete, brick and breeze blocks is complemented by clay and terracotta accents, while the upper tower adopts a lighter expression through articulated slab edges, vertical fins and recessed glazing.

Residents would have access to 467 sqm of communal open space spread across three levels. The ground floor would accommodate the more active resident areas, including barbecue and group gathering spaces and an internal communal room capable of being used for working from home.

A more passive viewing deck is proposed at level three, overlooking the ground-level landscaping and neighbouring tennis courts, while a rooftop "sunset deck" at level 30 would provide another social and relaxation space.

Strathfield has been earmarked for substantial change through the Strathfield Town Centre planning work and the nearby Homebush TOD precinct.

Turner's report says the project has been designed to act as a transition between the existing low and mid-rise development surrounding the site and the taller built form expected to emerge across the town centre.

The proposal is being assessed as State Significant Development under the HDA pathway, alongside the concurrent request to amend the Burwood Local Environmental Plan.

First look: New apartment tower pitched for Strathfield Town Centre precinct

An $18 million penthouse has hit the market in Main Beach as construction tops out on La Mer, the $155 million apartment development rising just metres from the beach.
