Queensland builder-developer MAYD has revealed the first look at its major North Kirra beachfront development, lodging amended plans that reduce the number of apartments and increase the proportion of larger residences.

The project is planned across a substantial 4,742 sqm amalgamated site spanning seven lots at <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/2-6-pacific-parade-bilinga-qld-4225">2-6 Pacific Parade</a> and 27-33 Golden Four Drive in Bilin​ga, directly opposite Nor​th Kirra Beach.

<a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/developers/mayd-group">MAYD</a> secured the site for $32.5 million in 2025, in what was one of the Gold Coast's largest property transactions of the year.

The development will be delivered across two stages, with the first stage carrying an estimated gross realisation value of around $360 million.

The latest amendments seek to reduce the overall apartment count and shift the project further toward the owner-occupier market, with larger residences designed for buyers wanting considerably more space than traditionally offered in a beachfront apartment.

The residential mix will include townhomes, oversized two-bedroom apartments, substantial three-bedroom residences and four-bedroom homes.

MAYD has appointed Cera Stribley to lead the architecture and interiors, with the Melbourne-based design practice drawing on the beachfront setting through a series of ocean-facing terraces and heavily landscaped balconies.

Strong horizontal forms and curved balconies will define the exterior, with subtropical landscaping integrated throughout the building to soften the built form and increase the connection between the residences and the beachfront.

The project will also include an extensive collection of resident wellness and lifestyle facilities, continuing the broader shift across the Gold Coast's luxury apartment market toward larger homes supported by resort-style amenity.

MAYD Founder Todd Mould said North Kirra was increasingly appealing to buyers attracted to the more established, lower-density character of the southern Gold Coast.

"North Kirra presents one of the most compelling luxury residential opportunities currently emerging in Australia, combining absolute beachfront with the character and authenticity that buyers are increasingly seeking, and the same sense of tight-knit community that defined Burleigh and Currumbin perhaps 10 or 15 years ago," Mould said.

"With Gold Coast Airport on its doorstep, it also offers a level of accessibility that broadens its appeal across almost every market demographic."

The project comes as the southern Gold Coast continues to attract an increasing share of high-end apartment development and buyer activity.

Kirra in particular has emerged as one of the region's more tightly held beachfront markets, with its relatively low-density character, established surf and hospitality scene and proximity to Gold Coast Airport differentiating it from the higher-density markets further north.

Mould said those characteristics had informed the approach MAYD and Cera Stribley had taken to the project.

"We've worked closely with Cera Stribley to create a vision that is deeply connected to its surroundings," he said.

"Inspired by the coastline itself, the architecture has been shaped around space, privacy and resort-style living, creating a collection of homes that reflects the next generation of luxury on the southern Gold Coast."

MOTIV Managing Director Carly Cottam, who has been appointed to market the project, said buyer attention had continued to move south along the Gold Coast.

"Purchasers who may once have defaulted to Broadbeach, Main Beach or Surfers Paradise are increasingly recognising the value of a genuine beachfront location that offers lower density, strong amenity and a more established sense of community," Cottam said.

"Kirra has a powerful combination of growing demand and genuine scarcity. Beachfront supply is inherently constrained, the area remains relatively low density, and buyers are increasingly placing a premium on locations that feel established, uncrowded and authentic rather than heavily developed."

Cottam said the proximity to Gold Coast Airport was also proving increasingly important for interstate and second-home buyers.

"Being minutes from Gold Coast Airport makes it particularly compelling for interstate buyers, frequent travellers and second-home purchasers who can access an authentic coastal lifestyle almost immediately after stepping off a flight."

The acquisition takes MAYD's active development portfolio to more than $500 million, with the North Kirra project representing one of its largest undertakings to date.

MAYD is targeting an early 2027 launch.

Castle Hill, the longtime hub of the Hills District, has been one of the major beneficiaries of Sydney's Metro expansion, with improved connectivity helping drive continued population growth, development and buyer demand across the Hills District.

But despite that growth, the suburb has seen relatively few major new apartment projects brought to market over the past 18 months.

Hills District developer Reve Group is looking to fill that gap with <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/nova-r-ve-castle-hill-2-garthowen-crescent-castle-hill-nsw-2154">Nova Rêve</a>, a major new mixed-use precinct on the corner of Garthowen Crescent and Old Castle Hill Road, a short walk from Castle Hill Metro Station and Castle Towers.

The project will comprise three residential towers alongside a hotel, restaurants, cafes and a skybar, more than 1,600 sqm of ground-floor retail and almost an acre of landscaped gardens.

It represents the largest project undertaken by Reve Group, the development arm of the Kassis family, which has been building across the Hills District for more than 30 years through Kassis Homes.

Nova Rêve also represents a significant step up from the family's first apartment development, Grand Rêve, which was delivered nearby on Garthowen Crescent.

Grand Rêve introduced larger, house-like apartment layouts and premium inclusions including Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances to the Castle Hill market.

Nova Rêve takes that approach to a precinct scale, combining the residential component with hospitality, retail and substantial public and resident landscaping.

Reve Group Managing Director Sam Kassis said the project reflected the family's three decades of building in the Hills, which has evolved from trophy homes on quarter-acre blocks to larger-scale apartment development.

"Grand Rêve was our first apartment project here and it showed us what this pocket of Castle Hill could be. Nova Rêve is the refinement of that idea: not just apartments, but a place the whole suburb can use," Kassis said.

A key part of that approach is the hotel, which has been designed to operate as an amenity for the wider Castle Hill community rather than solely hotel guests.

It will include restaurants, cafes, skybars and all-day dining, alongside conference and event facilities catering to business functions, community groups and private events.

At ground level, more than 1,600 sqm of shops and cafes will open onto the surrounding streets and landscaped areas.

Almost an acre of gardens designed by Land and Form Studios will run through the precinct, incorporating pathways, seating, barbecue areas and children's play spaces.

Reve Group's Romio Georges said creating an active ground plane had been central to the planning of Nova Rêve.

"There are gardens with pathways, barbecues, seating and play areas, shops and cafes opening onto the street, and a hotel with restaurants and a skybar that anyone in Castle Hill can walk into," Georges said.

The project's elevated position on one of Sydney's highest ridgelines will also provide apartments with outlooks toward the Sydney skyline, surrounding parkland and the Blue Mountains.

More than 80 per cent of the apartments will occupy corner positions, with Turner responsible for both the architecture and interiors.

Nova Rêve arrives as Reve Group bets on Castle Hill's next growth phase

A collection of just 25 large-format apartments and penthouses overlooking Goodwin Park is entering the Coolangatta market, with <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/marea-residences-coolangatta-27-27a-dixon-street-coolangatta-qld-4225">Maréa Residences</a> combining a low-density, residential-only approach with uninterrupted park and Pacific Ocean outlooks.

Located at 27 Dixon Street, Maréa comprises three and four-bedroom residences alongside a limited number of dual-level penthouses, with the project positioned between Goodwin Park and <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/developments/coolangatta-qld-4225">Coolangatta</a>’s coastal precinct.

Construction has commenced, with completion currently estimated for late 2027. Three-bedroom residences are priced from $1.8 million.

The project has been designed around its northern outlook across the park, with the building’s architecture, landscaping and material palette intended to establish a connection with the neighbouring green space. The residences have been configured to maximise natural light and views across Goodwin Park towards the ocean.

Inside, the material palette incorporates timber, stone and brushed brass, complemented by curved detailing and ambient lighting. Kitchens and bathrooms carry the same natural material approach, while residences also include basement parking, storage and lift access.

Maréa’s penthouses are arranged over two levels and include private pools, adding another layer to the project’s focus on larger-format apartment living. Across the development, residences are configured with three or four bedrooms rather than the broader mix of smaller apartment types commonly found in larger projects.

Resident amenity is concentrated at rooftop level, where landscaped entertaining terraces and pools take advantage of elevated views across Coolangatta and the Pacific Ocean.

The project has so far been particularly well received by local owner-occupiers and downsizers, according to Urban Activation Property Sales and Marketing Director Matt George, with the residential-only format, construction quality and northern park outlook among the features resonating with purchasers.

Maréa Residences brings parkside apartments to Coolangatta

Melbourne developer PDG has secured Victorian Government approval for its $1.5 billion Southbank development <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/the-one-1-queens-bridge-street-southbank-vic-3006">The One</a>, clearing the way for the long-dormant riverfront site opposite Crown to finally be developed.

The Minister for Planning has approved the project at 1-29 Queens Bridge Street, with the Department of Transport and Planning issuing the planning permit following its assessment.

The approval will allow PDG to develop the prominent 5,059 sqm site with a major mixed-use tower comprising premium apartments, including branded residences, a luxury hotel and boutique office space.

PDG acquired the site in late 2024, with its position directly opposite Crown's main entrance and near Melbourne's Arts Precinct making it one of Southbank's most significant remaining development opportunities.

Designed by COX in collaboration with ODO and PDG, the tower's architecture draws on the movement of the Yarra River, with six vertical pleats running the height of the sculpted facade.

The project will also see the heritage-listed Queens Bridge Hotel restored and incorporated into the development&nbsp;with new hospitality and public uses, including a rooftop venue.

A significant component of The One will be its residential amenity.

More than 5,000 sqm of resident facilities will be delivered across a single level, making it one of the largest consolidated residential amenity offerings proposed in an Australian apartment development.

The planning approval also incorporates a major upgrade of Queensbridge Square, which PDG will deliver in partnership with the City of Melbourne.

The existing square will be revitalised as a new civic and pedestrian space along the Yarra River, strengthening the connection between the project, Southbank and the riverfront.

PDG Founder and Managing Director Vince Giuliano said the approval represented a major milestone for a site which has remained largely underutilised for more than 15 years.

“This is the most significant Planning Permit approval Melbourne has seen in recent years,” Giuliano said.

“For more than 15 years, this site has remained underutilised. This approval enables us to deliver a project that will contribute meaningfully to the revitalisation of Southbank, restore and reactivate an important heritage building, and create a new civic and hospitality destination for Melbourne.”

The latest approval follows an earlier planning permit issued by the City of Melbourne covering demolition works across part of the site at 9-29 Queens Bridge Street. Those demolition and early works are already underway.

PDG has also started generating early interest in the residential component from owner-occupiers ahead of a planned public launch in early 2027.

PDG secures approval for $1.5bn Southbank apartment development, The One

Local developer Harridan is seeking to turn its Woolloongabba apartment project into the first stage of a broader transformation of Burke Street, using a new 16-storey mixed-use building to establish a greener pedestrian connection toward the rapidly evolving Boggo Road transport and knowledge precinct.

The South East Queensland developer has filed plans for 154 apartments on the <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/4-burke-street-woolloongabba-qld-4102">southern side of Burke Street</a>, where its proposal has been designed alongside a wider vision by LatStudios for the street.

That vision positions the southern side of Burke Street for buildings of 15 storeys and above, while envisaging lower-rise development of up to five storeys on the northern side to transition into Woolloongabba's existing character housing. It also proposes wider pedestrian verges, deep planting, new street trees and upgrades to the pedestrian approach to Boggo Road Station.

The Harridan development itself has been designed by Brisbane-based Arqus Design and will comprise 154 apartments across 16 storeys. The mix is weighted heavily toward two-bedroom apartments, with 121 proposed alongside 10 one-bedroom and 23 three-bedroom residences. There will typically be around 14 units per floor.

A lower-ground car park and three podium levels will accommodate 156 resident parking spaces, along with visitor and commercial parking. There will also be 154 resident bicycle spaces and 40 visitor bicycle parks.

Harridan is a family-owned developer and part of the Holmwood Highgate Group, with more than three decades of development activity across South East Queensland. Its portfolio spans residential, commercial and industrial property, with current residential projects including Riverbank on Byron in Bulimba, Esperance Residences in Carina and The Precinct at Kinross Road in Thornlands.

Wooloongabba has been popular for apartment developers, particularly since the announcement of the 2032 Summer Olympics games in Brisbane.

While there have been a lot of development applications, it has failed to materialize into real supply.&nbsp;

Sarazin has been the major player in the area. They are under construction at Murcia Residences, on the fringe of East Brisbane and Woolloongabba. They have just launched <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/the-stanley-residences-woolloongabba-8-trafalgar-street-woolloongabba-qld-4102">The Stanley Residences</a>, in Woolloongabba on Trafalagar Street. They also have Nuage coming soon on the nearby <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/nuage-woolloongabba-14-wellington-road-woolloongabba-qld-4102">Wellington Road</a>.

Raise your renovation game: Stilted Queensland offerings for Maddi and Lloyd fans

The House Rules contestants Adam and Lisa wanted wallpaper.
But they got more than they bargained for, especially with the controversial choice of bottle top wallpaper in the dining room which seriously clashed the rest of the house.
Today, our property contrarians Jonathan Chancellor and Margie Blok discuss wallpaper - and while they don’t mind the odd layer, they certainly don’t favour wallpapering the whole house.

I’m okay with wallpaper making a statement, but only if used sparingly or as a feature on one wall.  
Generally, wallpaper works best in rooms needing a lift, perhaps a poky second bedroom or a plain bathroom - such as the delightful Vivienne Westwood wallpaper in a bathroom of the Castlecrag mid-century home (pictured below). The property was sold by interior designer Tina De Salis and her husband Edward for $3.01 million in 2012<a href="https://www.randw.com.au/506596/" target="_blank"> through Mark O'Brien of Richardson &amp; Wrench Castlecrag &amp; Northbridge</a>.

Wallpaper took off in a big way during the 1920s. In this 'Golden Age of Wallpaper', more than 400 million rolls were sold as an affordable and mass-produced alternative to expensive silk and tapestry wall coverings.  
These days, snazzy wallpapers can be an inexpensive solution for jazzing up an original Art Deco bathroom – my preference is the Florence Broadhurst Cockatoos design in black and white (pictured below).

The Sydney designer Greg Natale is a strong advocate for Florence Broadhurst wallpapers which initially shot to prominence during the 1960s and 1970s when used by leading decorators of the day, including the late design doyen, Leslie Walford.  
Featuring rich colours, metallic finishes and vigorous designs, the hand screen-printed wallpaper collection was revived during 1990s by David and Helen Lennie, owners of Signature Prints, who drove the business exponentially while establishing the Florence Broadhurst name internationally.

While Natale’s Hollywood-style interiors have been splashed across the pages of interiors magazines including Belle, his distinctive decorating style also featured in Inner West Courier real estate pages during late 2012 when <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-nsw-five+dock-111968655" target="_blank">Laing + Simmons Drummoyne agent Frank Colacicco was marketing</a> a Five Dock house that subsequently sold for $1.34 million. Love the art deco tiles (above) in the bathroom, but the wallpaper is a little over the top. Ditto the wallpapered bedroom (below) doesn't appeal to me, cushions, bedhead and side tables included.

In my book, the old adage of “less is more” should be heeded when using wallpaper – and in one or two rooms only.
If House Rules contestants, Lisa and Adam, had mentioned “subtle and calm” instead of “wow statement in every room”, then the renovation of their home could have ended up without that nightmare reveal of clashing wallpapers in the open-plan living and dining areas.

When it comes to choosing wallpaper, DIY renovators should exercise restraint and err on the side of caution, rather than express gaudy evidence of their personal taste in every room. 
Wallpaper should be used as part of a fundamental framework of an overall decorative scheme. It should form the background of a room, not the foreground. For subtle sophistication and a visually rich effect, opt for classic wallpapers with a strié or grasscloth finish.
Given the extraordinary range of wallpapers on the market, it can be confusing to pick the right style and shade for a particular room. While you might lust after a Florence Broadhurst wallpaper spotted in a magazine or admire the wallpaper in a Kit Kemp-designed Firmdale hotel in London, or, it doesn’t mean these will work well in your home.

Families with seven children don't typically have Johanna Grigg from House Rules to call on to enlarge their tiny shoebox abodes.
The Tasmanian renovation reveal and judging attracted a 1.68 million five city metropolitan ratings audience according to OZtam last night, beating The Voice on Channel 9.
The location of the Brady Bunch-styled family was in the Huon Valley.
"Tassie is so hard to cast," House Rules <a href="https://www.mediaweekpodcasts.com/maxine-gray-%E2%80%93-house-rules/" target="_blank" style="line-height: 1.3em;">co-executive producer, Maxine Gray</a> told James Manning's Mediaweek shortly after the after filming the series was wrapped up earlier this year.
"But what Tassie brings is a different landscape," she said, saying the series needed it for diversity and state rivalry outcomes.
"Its refreshing for the viewer," she said.
So Property Observer went looking for other Tasmanian homes that suit big families on low cost budgets.
All in separate bedrooms under the same roof proved very rare.
Plenty of five bedroom homes. Lots of six bedders.
And seven bedrooms were available too.
At Brighton there's a brick home offering seven bedrooms (pictured below). There are two bathrooms, two spa baths and three toilets within the 270 square metre home. <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-tas-brighton-114867611" target="_blank">There's $439,000 plus being sought through Belle Parker at Roberts Glenorchy</a>. There are views of Mount Wellington and Mt Dromedary from the grounds of the 2.75 acres there are fruit trees, veggie patch and the chook pen.

At Davenport a property for the extended family, or for its current use as tourists accommodation, has been listed. Two levels featuring seven bedrooms, four living areas, three bathrooms , three toilets, four showers and a huge kitchen. Changing views of the river, city and sea. The property (pictured below) on 1,353 square metres is listed through John Ackroyd at <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-tas-devonport-113491615" style="line-height: 1.3em;">$875,000</a>.

There is a grand old home at Bushy Park (pictured below)- an 1859's home with 55 squares of comfort and space, sits on 22 acres. "With seven bedrooms there will no longer be any arguments with siblings sharing rooms," <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-tas-bushy+park-115849471" target="_blank" style="line-height: 1.3em;">listing agent Karen Storey at Sorell says</a>. It has three bathrooms.

There's seven self contained apartments in a <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-tas-longford-115918931" target="_blank">$699,000 Longford offering</a> (pictured below), which doesn't quite fit the bill.

Perhaps the most imposing with seven bedrooms is a heritage listed residence in the hills of Risdon (pictured below). <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-tas-risdon-115666843" target="_blank">It's for sale at $695,000 plus </a>through Sandra McKenzie at Harcourts Bellerive. The sizeable residence is set across three storeys and offers multiple reception rooms, two fully-equipped kitchens, seven bedrooms and four bathrooms.

But Property Observer found an eight bedder.
It's <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-tas-west+launceston-113842699" target="_blank" style="line-height: 1.3em;">Edenholme Grange</a> (pictured below), a grand Victorian mansion steeped in history. Originally built in 1881 by a sea captain, its current owners have restored and brought the property back to life to offer eight bedrooms in the main house as well as three separate fully self contained cottages. It is currently utilised as a bed and breakfast.

A modern home at Boat Harbour Beach is advertised as seven bedrooms, but he speil says nine is possible for the $829,000 asking price. All within meters to the main beach. <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-tas-boat+harbour+beach-115819011" target="_blank" style="line-height: 1.3em;">The 233 square metre home is set on 2600 square metre block</a>. The home (pictured below) was built in 2002. 
Designed on three levels the bottom consists of garage with internal access, two bedrooms, gym room, storage room, study, 3rd bathroom and a huge rumpus room. Second storey features large open plan living, three bedrooms and main bathroom. Upstairs to two more bedrooms, master has full en-suite with corner spa, plus a sun or sewing room.
"This huge home of seven bedrooms (nine if needed) would be your ideal property besides the sea and would be ideal for holiday rentals (STCA)," the marketing says.

When it comes to 10 bedders try Launceston! Though both are current commercially utilised at the moment.
Kilmarnock House was built in 1905 as a townhouse for John Ingles, a well-known Launceston merchant. The completed cost, as charged by J &amp; T Gunn, was a moderate 1588 pounds, 15 shillings and threepence.<a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-tas-launceston-115639983" target="_blank" style="line-height: 1.3em;"> Last offered for sale over 33 years ago</a>, Kilmarnock House (pictured below) is currently operating as studio style apartments offering 10 bedrooms each with their own ensuite and kitchenette, the property also has a separate one bedroom unit.

Property Observer did come across <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-tas-huonville-110263825" target="_blank">a 12 bedroom home in Huonville</a> (pictured below). Paul Noble at Roberts Huonville describes the home as like the “tardis” stepping through the door of the 892 square metre home currently configured as nine bedrooms, but with three studies. There's four bathrooms, three living areas, a games room and a self contained flat all on 1.05 hectare with winter creek set 30 minutes drive to Hobart.

Tasmania's biggest bedroomed home listings for House Rules Brady Bunch-style families

Cowboys community relations executive Maddison (Maddi) Carter and her aviation firefighting fiancé, Lloyd Wright, are having their House Rules renovation aired this week on Channel 7. There will be a 10 out of 10 perfect room reveal.
The Queenslanders Maddi and Lloyd are relatively laid-back, so their House Rules application almost never made it in.
It follows the Tasmanian renovation reveal and judging attracted a 1.68 million five city metropolitan ratings audience according to OZtam last night, beating The Voice on Channel 9.
Property Observer notes the far north Queensland couple had paid $372,000 for their somewhat leaning, <a href="https://au.tv.yahoo.com/house-rules/houses/lloyd_and_maddison/#page1" target="_blank">four bedroom 1950s house</a> (pictured above) which was marketed through Ross Real Estate Aitkenvale as "beachside paradise" given it is three streets back from the beach.
It had been passed in at March 2013 auction when $400,000 was being sought for the property which had been last sold at $348,000 in 2004.
It is the first regional, non-capital city location, filmed in the series.
"I walked in and didn’t even need to see the whole house... we just went ‘Yep’ and made an offer on the spot," says Maddi, a marketing manager and former reporter. Their large, high-set timber home with a wrap-around deck and pool is minutes to the beach and backs onto a reserve frequented by wildlife. The house has been ravaged by the region’s tropical weather over its 25 years with rot and mould a problem, along with leaky taps, uneven floors, an almost unusable kitchen and a "grotty" bathroom with pink floor tiles.
One of the rooms has been <a href="https://au.tv.yahoo.com/house-rules/clips/23668656/worst-rooms-maddi-and-lloyd-qld-/#page1" target="_blank">used just for Maddi's shoes</a>.

Source: Channel 7. Before joining the aviation firefighters, Lloyd worked in the building industry as a plasterer and labourer for close to a decade, while Maddi has grown up on building sites. "I’ve lived in, like, 30 houses. Dad would renovate them and then we would move on to the next. I enjoy the smell of sawdust. It feels like home." Both in their mid-20s, home for Lloyd was originally Papua New Guinea before his family moved to Cairns when he was six. Maddi hails from Victoria, but grew up in Brisbane.

The six new teams from around Australia put their homes on the line as they battle it out to become mortgage free against their competition rivals to transform every room in their house. They must have a strong emotional attachment to their newly purchased homes to be selected for the series, now in its second season. It was a Channel 7 reality television concept.
Host Johanna Griggs sends in designer Carolyn Burns-McCrave and build supervisor Chester Drife to oversee the teams, who have only one week to completely transform each home.
Two expert judges – architect Joe Snell and Home Beautiful editor Wendy Moore – score each teams’ renovation.
James Manning's Mediaweek speculated Maddi's colourful past "could be attracting a lot of media coverage this year".
Manning and media commentator Brenden Wood were<a href="https://www.mediaweekpodcasts.com/maxine-gray-%E2%80%93-house-rules/" target="_blank"> interviewing co-executive producer, Maxine Gray</a> after filming the series over the prior six months. 
"I've been friends for 10 years or more….She tried to get into radio in Brisbane….as a news reader. She may have been a swimwear model for various magazines….she's pleasing on the eye," Brenden Wood chipped in, adding she was briefly at GWS in its foundation days.
Gray said the couple had an engaging personality with a big rambling Queenslander house that they thought had great potential.
"It was a tricky one for us…..is it going to be as good as a home in Brisbane in terms of rating?"
"All in all we thought it was worth going outside the capital city," she said. The series was filmed between October and Easter this year.

Swimwear model Maddi's shoe room overhaul as House Rules hits tropical Pallarenda, Townsville

Western Australian couple Russell and Carole - contestants on House Rules 2014 - purchased their home off Gumtree.
It was advertised under the heading "renovate or detonate".
"Russell was being ridiculous looking at places that were too expensive so I plugged into Gumtree, ‘Houses for Sale’ and put in an amount that we could afford," said Carole.
Despite the extensive work needed, Carole could see potential, falling in love with the valley views, then buying without any building inspection report. 
They now have a $290,000 mortgage, <a href="https://au.tv.yahoo.com/house-rules/clips/23221878/worst-rooms-carole-and-russell-wa-/" target="_blank">with the renovation by rival contestants airing this week on Channel 7</a>.
Their home on stilts was sitting unstable on an overgrown block in the Perth Hills.
"I wasn’t happy because there was so much work to do," the administration manager, Russell recollects.
After he met Carole, who works for the local council, at a party in 2001, they renovated and sold their first Perth house at a profit.
But the pair lost money when prices dropped after the global financial crisis in 2008.
 Reminscent of the 2013 couple Steve and Michelle at Collaroy Plateau in some ways as the Sydney couple had previously hit tough times too after putting money into a property development venture that went bankrupt. Even after Steve and Michelle sold their prior house they still had debt to pay off.
There are currently anywhere <a href="https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-property-for-sale/c18367?sort=price_desc" target="_blank">between 2,000 and 4000 properties</a> for sale on Gumtree from over $1 million to desired swap arrangements.
Many of them are offering the house for relocation with the land being kept by the owner.

The second season of Channel 7’s renovation show House Rules made a strong debut earlier this week, attracting <a href="/expert-insights/building/johanna-griggs-house-rules-triumphant-second-series-debut">1.87 viewers on Wednesday night</a>. 
Six couples will compete to make over each other’s houses, with the winning team’s mortgage completely repaid.
Reality television blog Reality Ravings has revealed each team’s mortgage size.
Victorian couple Adam and Lisa will bring home the biggest net sum if they win the competition, with a mortgage of $520,000 on their 1960s weatherboard home according to the website. The couple bought the three bedder two years ago.

Brooke and Grant took on the smallest mortgage of any of the contestants. They have $258,000 of debt attached to their home in Tasmania’s Huon Valley. The two bedroom farmhouse Grant purchased six years ago is home for the couple and their seven children. According to the couple, prior to the competition they considered moving Brooke out of the home to make more room for the family.

Western Australian couple Russell and Carole have the second smallest mortgage. The 28 year old home they purchased off Gumtree has landed them with a $290,000 mortgage.

Channel 7’s House Rules: The contestants and their mortgages

The Johanna Griggs hosted House Rules second series debut was triumphant last night with 1.18 million metropolitian viewers.
There were 1.87 million viewers including the regions, with a younger audience tuned in this year, according to the OzTam ratings.
The ratings for the Channel 7 renovation home show was 47% up on its 2013 launch night.
But more significantly it was up 9% on the 2014 debut ratings of The Block earlier this year.
The first rundown home for renovation is from Candy and Ryan in western Sydney with a $437,000 mortgage.
It was a slow start last year for the House Rules series with its host Johanna Griggs telling Property Observer last season that its slow but sure success came from "people power."
"This show has people power to thank as more &amp; more people spread the word, &amp; to 7 for sticking by us!" the host Johanna Griggs tweeted last season to Property Observer.

The show pits teams of two from all over Australia to compete in the series where the winner's have their mortgage completely wiped.
The state-versus-state renovations, in the series from the makers of My Kitchen Rules, get judged by Wendy Moore the editor of Home Beautiful and Joe Snell who is an architect. There are renovation mentors also back from last year, Carolyn Burns-McCrave and build supervisor Chester Drife.
The teams have to work independently on their own zone within each house but they also have to work as a team to ensure each room complements the other when it's completed.
The six homes are aimed to come from a bunch of likeable Australians with interesting back stories.

Renovation reality television has returned with Channel 7’s second season of House Rules. 
Each of the six teams will compete to renovate another team’s home, with the team producing the best results winning the full some of their mortgage.
