ASX-listed developer Cedar Woods is progressing its plans for its Southbank arts precinct site.&nbsp;

The developer has filed plans, which are now with the&nbsp;Department of Transport and Planning, for a new 20-level tower at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/141-151-sturt-street-southbank-vic-3006">141–151 Sturt Street</a>, a 2,718 sqm block opposite the Habitat Filter sculpture.

The proposal seeks to demolish the two-level&nbsp;commercial building, including a small supermarket and medical tenancies, and create a new building with 180 apartments and a focus on an&nbsp;active public realm and arts integration.

There will be a full mix of apartment configurations, including 28 studio apartments, 16 one-bedroom, 104 two-bedroom, and 32 three-bedroom units.

Retail, creative arts, and residential amenity functions are integrated across the lower levels. A food and drink tenancy is planned to front Dodds Street, while a retail tenancy fronting Sturt Street will be accessed via an elevated walkway. The first floor includes a substantial 734 sqm creative arts space, envisioned to support Melbourne’s growing cultural and digital industries.

Architecture firm <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/architects/rothelowman">Rothelowman</a> has put together the plans. In their&nbsp;Urban Design Report they highlighted the project’s ambition to embed itself within Southbank’s evolving cultural fabric.

A central feature of the design is a through-block link connecting Sturt and Dodds Streets, landscaped with native plantings and embedded with universal access ramps.

“The ramp has been thoughtfully integrated as the primary access point, ensuring universal accessibility for all users,” the report noted, with the link offering “a direct response to the urban planning scheme of creating more green spaces within our communities”.

The building’s podium form responds to the mandatory height limits along Dodds Street and maintains a fine-grain interface to adjoining developments. Above the podium, the tower is articulated with recessed balconies and a focus on views toward the CBD and surrounding arts institutions. A communal rooftop recreation deck and indoor lounge are positioned on level four, adjoining seven apartments and providing over 900 sqm of resident amenity space.

Vehicle access and loading will be provided via Dodds Street, with 155 resident car spaces located across two basement levels and the first three above-ground floors. Bicycle storage is more generous, with 226 spaces distributed across resident, staff and visitor needs.

Rothelowman describes the architecture as “humanist,” with ground-level interfaces designed to encourage social interaction and provide a dignified entry for both residents and passers-by. “All street interfaces are crafted to invite and nurture human connections,” the design report states. “The façade transitions to a human scale, providing an approachable and engaging streetscape”.

Cedar Woods, while well-known for its large communities it develops outside of Australia's capital cities, they have recently developed in Melbourne's inner-ring before. They are approaching completion at <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-townhouses/88-leveson-north-melbourne-88-leveson-street-north-melbourne-vic-3051">88 Leveson</a>, just 15 townhouses in the heart of North Melbourne.

Cedar Woods progresses with new apartment plans in Southbank arts precinct

Brisbane developers Core Property Partners and Vector Property Australia has teamed up for Brisbane's newest apartment development.

The duo identified <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/developments/east-brisbane-qld-4169">East Brisbane</a> as their preferred suburb, on the fringe of the Gabba Precinct, where they've just revealed BANKSII, 72 apartments opposite Raymond Park.

The one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments will sit in a glass-wrapped building that will also feature a rooftop with an&nbsp;infinity-edge pool, a BBQ area and alfresco dining spaces, sun lounges, and a sauna, as well as a resident-only gym and a ground-floor cafe.

Rhett Williams, Director of Vector Property Australia, said the project will lift the quality of the East Brisbane community and set a new benchmark.

The 10-level building has been designed by MAS Architecture. Their designs were inspired by the native Banksia flower, with the architecture and interiors reflecting the organic symmetry of its namesake flora. MAS has interpreted this throughout the building’s curved form, façade detailing and interior palette.&nbsp;

The building’s flowing geometry and natural tones are complemented by large balconies and floor-to-ceiling glazing, maximising cross-breezes, daylight and views over the city, parklands and river.

“Having a strong narrative for a building helps us architecturally,” MAS noted. "We can choose colours that come off that species of flowers. The trunk and the trees and the flower elements all are now visible in our joinery on the inside and in our architectural finishes on the outside."

Apartments will feature timber floors, soft porcelain tiles, brushed bronze fittings, and stone benchtops with warm veining.&nbsp;

Kitchens feature premium SMEG appliances and generous storage, while bathrooms have been designed as calming retreats with curved cabinetry and twin sinks in the master ensuites.

The building will feature a suite of rooftop and wellness amenities. Residents will have access to an infinity-edge pool, BBQ and alfresco dining areas, sun lounges and a rooftop sauna.&nbsp;

A residents-only gym will be located on the podium level, while a ground-floor café and landscaped laneway will further activate the site and improve neighbourhood connectivity.

BANKSII will rise from a prime Wellington Road site, with the building oriented to overlook the adjacent Raymond Park and take in extensive city views. It is also on the doorstep of key&nbsp;lifestyle infrastructure, including the future Kangaroo Point Green Bridge, The Gabba stadium, and the planned Brisbane Live arena.&nbsp;

Public transport options, including ferry, bus and rail - including the future Cross River Rail Woolloongabba station - are all nearby, supporting a car-optional lifestyle just minutes from the CBD.

Williams said the team spent over a year searching for the ideal site before securing this location.

The project is part of the broader Woolloongabba Games precinct, which is undergoing significant investment in the lead-up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. This urban renewal, coupled with infrastructure upgrades, is expected to enhance long-term liveability and capital growth in the area.

Given the wide max of configurations, BANKSII is expected to suit everyone from first home buyers and investors to families and downsizers.

BANKSII sales launch in booming East Brisbane apartment market

The Minns Labor Government will deliver Sydney’s first new heavy rail station in more than a decade – enabling up to 10,000 new homes by rezoning land around Woollahra and Edgecliff stations, right next to the CBD, to tackle the housing crisis and rebalance growth across the city.

Recent reports by the NSW Productivity Commission have warned that Sydney is losing twice as many young people as it is gaining, while also finding that Woollahra is the most feasible Local Government Area (LGA) in New South Wales to build new housing.

Despite this, housing approvals in Woollahra consistently lag well behind other LGAs, and the population has declined by 11 per cent over the past 50 years while Greater Sydney as a whole has grown by 74 per cent.

The new station that will be an eight-minute trip from Sydney CBD, will be located on the Eastern Suburbs train line in Woollahra, where a station build was started in the 1970s but never completed.

To enable the delivery of new homes the NSW Government will lead a rezoning of Woollahra and Edgecliff stations similar to other state led rezonings to allow additional homes to be built around the stations.

Affordable housing will also make up a proportion of development on the site with the final amount of affordable housing required, to be determined as part of the rezoning process.

The area surrounding the new station is within walking distance of major green and recreational space including Cooper, Trumper, Rushcutters Bay and Centennial Parks.

The Eastern Suburbs train line between Bondi Junction and Sydney CBD also has the lowest passenger usage rates during the AM peak of any line on the Sydney network, with only 43 per cent of operating capacity during the AM peak currently being utilised by passengers.

Sydney Water and Infrastructure NSW have confirmed there is capacity in the water and wastewater systems to accommodate the proposed 10,000 dwellings without major upgrades.

The rezoning is expected to take around two years and will further support the Government’s housing targets that rebalance the delivery of new homes around existing infrastructure.

First look: Kokoda secures Richmond site for new apartment development

Gold Coast developer Drew Group is fast approaching sell-out at its Main Beach apartment development, Lagoon Main Beach.

In the last nine months, Drew Group and sales partner Pezet Matheson have secured 31 sales totalling over $75 million, as the two-tower development advances towards completion under the expert eye of Hutchinson Builders.

The Victorian Government’s massive upgrade of the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville has begun.

Premier Daniel Andrews, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Martin Pakula and Minister for Women Gabrielle Williams visited the Centre today to mark the start of construction on the new home for netball and hockey in Victoria.

The upgrade will replace the existing outdoor netball courts with six new indoor courts, a new indoor hockey facility, upgraded change facilities, a creche for parents playing at the centre, and a high-performance strength and conditioning gym. It will also build a new northern entrance, better connecting the centre to public transport.

The new state-of-the-art facility will cater for all levels of competition – providing playing fields for grassroots teams and a major training base for elite athletes in both sports – and be a world-class venue to host major state, national and international tournaments like the Hockey Pro-League.

The Victorian Government has appointed contractor Kane Constructions to deliver the project, with close to 30 jobs to be created during construction. The project is scheduled to be complete in 2021.

The Centre is used by more than 6,000 people every week – 80 per cent of whom are girls and women.

The project is part of the $241.6 million package unveiled by the Victorian Government last year – the biggest investment in women’s and community sport in Victoria’s history. On top of the State Netball and Hockey Centre upgrade, the package includes:

Massive Upgrade Of State Netball And Hockey Centre Begins

The panel includes a diverse group of industry leaders from Cantilever Interiors, NH Architecture, Schiavello and HIP V. HYPE as they explain how they execute and experiment with human-centred design. The panel will delve into the creation of value through design, the importance of design outcomes for users and the processes used to enhance products and the places we inhabit with a human-centred approach.

Collectivity Talks: Experts explore the power of human-centred design as part of Melbourne Design Week

As previously reported in June, the State Government has committed $208 million towards the first stage of the transformation of Melbourne’s Arts Precinct.

It includes the continued development of the Reimagining Arts Centre Melbourne’s Master Plan, plus maintenance works for the Theatres Building which aims to minimise redundant works in the future.

In order to deliver the Arts Centre Melbourne’s vision for the future of the Theatres Building, NH Architecture and Norway’s Snøhetta have been appointed to commence design work on the project.

NH Architecture has previously worked on both stages of the Melbourne Convention Centre, Margaret Court Arena and the Stage 2 and 3 Masterplans for Melbourne &amp; Olympic Parks.

Snøhetta is a design studio based in Oslo and New York City with an office in Australia and is responsible for the design of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, the 9/11 Memorial Pavilion and Times Square redevelopment projects in New York.

The Arts Precinct transformation includes the development of a building for the NGV Contemporary and major upgrades to theatres and public spaces at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Theatres Building. Additionally a new creative hub at 1 City Road will provide new rehearsal and workshop spaces. 

An expanded Australian Music Vault and a new Australian Performing Arts Gallery are also on the design agenda. The NGV Contemporary will involve the construction of a new gallery on the site of the current CUB administration building on Kavanagh Street, which the State Government purchased for $95m earlier this year.

The project will also include more than 18,000 sqm of new and upgraded public realm, knitting together the Melbourne Arts Precinct with City of Melbourne's Southbank Boulevard transformation.

Conceived by ARM, the outdoor space will connect St Kilda Road between Hamer Hall and the Theatres Building, running along the western side of the Theatres Building and National Gallery of Victoria through to Southbank Boulevard.

It was recently announced that Cumulus Studio are the winners of an architectural design competition hosted by Arts Centre Melbourne (ACM) for a new design for Café Cento. Located adjacent to the National Gallery of Victoria, the ACM challenged a shortlist of architects to design a new “unique and memorable” home for what has become an ageing eyesore.

Cumulus Studio's design, dubbed ‘The Protagonist’, investigates what exists beyond the monolithic walls of the Arts Centre and extends the experience to the street.

Image: Cumulus Studio</figcaption></figure>Characterised by an adjustable external screen which draws inspiration from the Theatre's curtains, The Protagonist seeks to create a significant civic presence that directly reflects the ACM brand.

In the morning, the curtains will be raised as the cafe opens, then at night, the curtains will be lowered to signify the end of service. Once lowered, the curtain can be used for art projection, marketing of upcoming ACM events, and lighting to activate the precinct at night.

As the primary design feature, Cumulus Studio settled on Kaynemaile for the curtain material.

The material is a fire and UV resistant polycarbonate chainmail mesh, originally developed as chainmail for the Lord of the Rings movie costumes.

NH Architecture and Snøhetta appointed for Arts Centre project

In today's piece as part of Apartments.com.au's Road to the Victorian Architecture Awards series, in the lead up to the awards dinner on Friday 29th June, we speak to Hamish Lyon, Director of Architecture and Design at NH Architecture. Leading the design direction of the firm, Hamish is an advocate for architecture, regularly engaging in public debate.

Hamish and the NH Architecture team have worked on the Monash Business School redevelopment, shortlisted in the educational architecture category at this year’s Victorian Architecture Awards. Giving us an insight into the project which brings the corporate environment into the classroom, he also shares his perspective on architecture in Melbourne more broadly.

Hamish Lyon: Designed exclusively for postgraduate and executive business students the project transcends the traditional stereotype of cellular learning and delivers a high quality environment which bridges the gap between executive-level education and a corporate environment.

Planning and design acknowledged the necessity to transform spaces from a teaching lead environment to one appropriate for executive style events requiring high-quality presentations, function facilities and corporate hospitality.

U: What challenges did the existing building pose?

HL: The new Monash Business School project is a combination of a three-level fit-out of an existing 1990s speculative office building coupled with a small addition of new work.

The specification and environmental performance criteria of the original building was extremely poor, offering little opportunity to achieve many of the now accepted initiatives of sustainable design. Despite these limitations, the school consciously fulfilled the requirements for a high performing education space with enhanced acoustic façade treatment, lighting and building services.

U: Where do you see the trend moving forward for educational architecture?

HL: In reaching out to the global community the Business School acknowledged the expectations of the local and international market, placing emphasis on the student staff experience and connecting corporate industry with education, mixing and blending private with public.

The demand on space will continue to ensure buildings will extend beyond their traditional hours of operation providing facilities for aligned industries outside the core business of education.

An attitude of “one size does not fit all” means the relationship between program and space has become more challenging.

U: The Monash Business School redevelopment bridges the gap between executive-level education and the corporate environment. What elements of both the education and corporate spheres were integral in your design?

HL: The traditional segregated office style floor plates were transformed with the introduction of two interconnecting stairs: one within the existing building structure and the other in the new adjoining Pavilion, built on the existing external terrace and housing a state of the art auditorium and function facility.

The distinct Pavilion visible from both Dandenong Road and the local train station is an asset for both the Business School and the broader University community; for corporate and dignitary functions throughout the year. Providing a flexible and accessible reception and student staff lounge area adjacent to the pavilion offer a public area for an expanded conferencing and function facility available to the wider corporate community.

HL: Our approach to design has been formed by the city in which we reside. Melbourne’s high quality of public amenity underwrites the moniker of “world’s most liveable city”.

In its built form the city has many lessons to teach and as a practice we actively research its public spaces, institutions and businesses to understand its particular vibe – we see it as a world-class laboratory of buildings and space.

Road to the Victorian Architecture Awards 2018: NH Architecture's Hamish Lyon

Today's article will predominantly focus on the northern precincts including District Docklands (formerly Waterfront City/Harbour Town), New Quay, and Digital Harbour.

<h2>Quest / Elm &amp; Stone, NewQuay</h2>

The development features 221 Quest serviced apartments in addition to 142 dwellings and is due for completion in 2019.

<h2>District Docklands, Master Plan</h2>

Original Image: AsheMorgan</figcaption></figure>Owner of The District Docklands, AsheMorgan has engaged NH Architecture to undertake Master Planning to facilitate the development of a 190,000sqm mixed-use precinct on the remaining undeveloped land within the former Waterfront City boundary offering employment, shopping and living space. 

This follows on from the first stage overhaul of the former Harbour Town centre which has now been completed and comprised the installation of new canopies, facades, paving and landscaping elements.

The next stage involves the provision of a 8,300sqm HOYTS cinema and entertainment complex, which also include Archie Brothers Electric Circus, 8Eight Street Asian hawker-style restaurant and Urban Alley Brewery along with other food and beverage offerings.

The $45m development is on track to be completed in September of this year.

Looking further ahead, future stages of the overall Master Plan which are being rolled out include a fresh food market within the re-purposed existing multi-storey car park and a Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) commercial building.

These are further outlined below;

<h2>Woodwork Building, The District Docklands</h2>

<figcaption>The Woodwork Building. Image: FKD Studio</figcaption></figure>A planning permit was recently issued for an 8,000sqm office building which will sit above the existing centre along Waterfront Way (soon-to-be Market Lane), valued at $56m.

Designed by NH Architecure, the building, to be known as Woodwork comprises a ground floor retail lobby with four large open plan office floors above, and 80% of the construction will consist of CLT, with the timber to be sourced from sustainable forests.

Woodwork will be the first CLT office building in Melbourne and is expected to be completed in 2020.

<h2>The Market, The District Docklands</h2>

<figcaption>The Market @ The District. Image: AsheMorgan</figcaption></figure>On Tuesday 15 May the District Docklands team "cracked the concrete" of the East Car Park to officially mark the beginning of construction on Docklands new food precinct, The Market. 

The internationally-inspired marketplace, will provide Docklands with a fresh food precinct that includes butchers, delis, bakers, coffee roasters and cafes in addition to major retail in the form of a Woolworths supermarket, Dan Murphy’s, a large-scale Asian Grocer and Priceline Pharmacy.

A Medical Centre, as well as health and beauty services, will round out the convenience offer, providing for surrounding residents and visitors with a one stop shop for their day to day needs.

The Market is officially slated to open in  July 2019.

Designed by Jackson Clements Burrows the development will comprise 183 apartments across 21-storeys with 117 car spaces to be provided.

The apartment mix will include 6 x three bedroom apartments, 118 x two bedroom, and 55 one bedders in addition to SOHO style two-storey dwellings.

According to <a href="http://www.docklandsnews.com.au/editions/article/container-inspired-apartment-block_14314/">Docklands News</a>, the design was "inspired by a vision of containers stacked on a wharf. Wharf-type timbers will also be employed on the lower podium levels to complete the metaphor."

<h2>26-34 Digital Drive, Digital Harbour</h2>

Images: Bates Smart</figcaption></figure>Architects Bates Smart have recently published images in their <a href="https://www.batessmart.com/journal/2018/humanising-the-office/">online Journal</a> of a new 22 level commercial office building for Cbus Property located adjacent to 1010 LaTrobe Street.

The brick-clad building draws on the texture and character of nearby heritage buildings, and includes an outdoor terrace 40m above ground marking a streetwall datum, while three-storey voids internally allow for more expansive views outwards from the office levels.

<h2>160 Harbour Esplanade, Stadium Precinct</h2>

How this strategic acquisition ties into the redevelopment of the soon-to-be renamed Marvel Stadium and Harbour Esplanade remains to be seen, but the price tag suggests it forms a crucial piece of the puzzle.

It could potentially provide the AFL with accommodation allowing its current headquarters to be redeveloped into a 7 star waterfront hotel, inline with concept plans released earlier this year.

According to the <a href="https://www.afr.com/real-estate/victorian-government-homes-in-on-sevens-docklands-hq-20180625-h11tqr">AFR</a>, a Development Victoria spokesperson has stated that the purchase would allow it to "develop long-term strategies to revitalise the Docklands Stadium and waterfront."

Docklands Development Update July 2018

Following the completion of a recent spate of major capital works projects, Monash University has taken the opportunity to revisit the 2011-2030 Master Plan for its Caulfield Campus. To this end, the University engaged, a team of consultants comprising designers and engineers, in December 2016, to deliver the Caulfield Campus Masterplan Update. 

The need to revisit and refresh the Master Plan arose largely due to the significant changes which have occurred in the precinct since the adoption of the Caulfield Campus Masterplan 2011-2030, requiring the University to reassess its strategies and priorities, allowing it to better adapt to new trends and challenges which the Campus faces. 

The Caulfield Campus Masterplan Update provides a vision and framework for the physical development of the campus over the next twenty years. It outlines how the University will be improving its education facilities, offering students better services and more transport options, creating higher quality green spaces, and improving the sustainability and adaptability of our campuses.

It aims to create a vibrant, welcoming and sustainable campus at Caulfield, and to achieve this development needs to be carefully curated. The Master Plan also provides a 20-year vision and framework for the physical development of Monash University's Caulfield Campus.

The Master Plan ensures that Monash University is creating the highest quality environments that support and stimulate education and research, and increase connectivity with the broader community.

<h2>Core Principles of the Master Plan:</h2>

The Univeristy has identified a number of major external developments which are either underway or in different stages of planning, including Caulfield Village and the possible future development of Melbourne Racing Club

Additionally, Caulfield Station will be redeveloped and with the potential to extend to accommodate longer high-capacity metro trains as part of the Cranbourne- Pakenham Line upgrade.

In the intervening period, the University will undertake the necessary planning processes, stakeholder engagement and feasibility studies in preparation for commencement of works once the current lease expires, facilitating redevelopment of the site for Building B1.

Monash University Refreshes its Caulfield Master Plan for 2017-2030

Golden Age Group has recently launched the website for its Sky Garden Residences, to be developed above airspace as part of The Glen redevelopment project. City of Monash initially approved plans for the $500 million redevelopment of The Glen shopping centre in Glen Waverley in 2015.

Key features of The Glen redevelopment include:

<ul>
<li>an expansion of the retail centre across the existing car park in Springvale Road, Glen Waverley</li>
	<li>three apartment towers above the retail podium, with the highest being 20-storeys</li>
	<li>a new public square at the entrance to the shopping centre, with cafes and restaurants creating a cosmopolitan connection between Kingsway and The Glen.</li>
</ul>
In November 2016, Council approved an amended permit for the residential towers at 235 Springvale Rd, Glen Waverley which was once again amended and approved in January 2018. 

Key aspects of the proposed amendments relate to modification of the overall massing, layout and mix of residential apartments of Building A, (Signature Building), B (Urban Building) and Building C (Kingsway Axial Building). 

Each building will increase in overall height by 1m and will adopt a new facade treatment to what was originally approved.

The revised plans prepared by RotheLowman include an additional 89 car spaces and the provision of 555 apartments across the three towers comprising of:

	<li>371 x 2 bedroom apartments; and </li>
	<li>57 x 3 bedroom apartments. </li>

The new residences will also take advantage of their position within the newly revitalised shopping and entertainment precinct of The Glen Shopping Centre.

The first stage of the redevelopment of The Glen - the Fresh Food Market Hall - opened in September 2017 and is located on the lower ground level offering a wide choice and variety of fresh produce and specialty ingredients in one location.

The Fresh Food Market Hall features an ALDI, latest format Woolworths, Coles and 60 boutique food retailers and specialty stores.

Vicinity Centre's redevelopment of The Glen will occur across five stages spanning three years which will create a new 'town square' with dining over two levels, new mini-majors, a fresh food market hall and 240+ select stores on completion. The five stages of the redevelopment are summarised below.

Sky Garden residences launched as construction progresses on The Glen

There’s been a flurry of activity at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre’s (MCEC) $200 million expansion site, with remarkable progress being made during throughout the latter stages of 2017.

Designed by Woods Bagot and NH Architecture for the Victorian Government’s partner in the project, Plenary Group, the expansion will maintain the built quality and delegate experience at the existing MCEC and maintain its leading benchmark status in the Asia-Pacific region.

The 20,000 square metres expansion includes 9,000 square metres of flexible, multi-purpose event space, new exhibition halls, additional meeting rooms, a banquet room and the Goldfields Café and Bar. Once completed, the new space will cement MCEC’s position as the largest convention and exhibition space in Australia, with an increased total size of over 70,000 square metres.

Image : Supplied</figcaption></figure>Set to open mid-year, the new space has been architecturally designed to provide customers with more options for any event type; from meetings and conferences through to educational seminars or gala dinners. A multi-purpose space will have retractable seating for up to 1,100 people; service pods, meeting rooms and informal meeting spaces.

There will also be a large concourse and a banquet room with capacity to cater for up to 450 people. 
Probuild will have the construction programme to a point whereby as of late this month the installation of the central staircase, distinctive gold exterior panels and a skylight over the new foyer space will be in place.  
MCEC took inspiration from Victoria’s rich history in determining names for key spaces within its expansion. The greatest inspiration came from the gold colour of the expansion’s exterior, culminating in Victoria’s goldfields becoming the theme from which names would be drawn.  
From the Goldfields Theatre, Sovereign Room, Eureka Rooms and Goldfields Café and Bar, the names link to the goldfields of Victoria’s past having been a place for people to gather along with a period of new opportunities, ideas, prosperity and grandeur.

<figcaption>Construction progress during January</figcaption></figure>The works are part of a larger South Wharf expansion project that includes a new 347-room Novotel Melbourne South Wharf and a new 1,150-space multi-level car park – all fully connected and integrated with existing buildings. The multi-level car park is complete, and the new hotel will open in March.

The expansion will include: more meeting rooms, a gala ballroom, 6 new exhibition bays, retractable theatre, courtyard meeting rooms, outdoor terrace and a new cafe and bar.

Access to the new exhibition hall will be via the new concourse or the new central hub space, which will be the dynamic focal point of this new precinct. Linked to both the existing exhibition centre concourse and the main plenary foyer this exciting new hub space will be the place for people to meet and connect.

As the first convention centre in the world to be awarded a 6-Star Green Star environmental rating, sustainability remains at the core of Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre’s (MCEC) business priorities. Over the past two years the venue has decreased energy consumption in the Exhibition Centre by 30 per cent, due to the introduction of ecological and sustainable infrastructure.  
  
The venue has invested in a new CO2 monitoring system, variable speed drives, energy efficient chillers, an energy management system and are currently trialling LED lights in the Exhibition Centre bays to further reduce energy usage. 

Although the venue is set to grow by 25 per cent when the expansion project reaches completion in mid-2018, MCEC is working to ensure its carbon emissions don’t increase through sourcing power from renewable energy.

MCEC Expansion on target for mid-year opening

Two major projects within City of Monash will provide the municipality with a development boost over coming years.

Construction will begin this month on The Glen's $490 million development, with Vicinity Centres and co-owners Perron Group officially launching the project yesterday. Marking 50 years of operation, 'The New Glen' will encompass 78,000 square metres of gross lettable area and will include a variety of new retail and entertainment options.

As part of the development that will be completed by 2020, a new Town Square will also be built. Apartments.com.au highlighted the <a href="/news/the-glen-redevelopment-grows-further-with-more-apartments-approved">centre's revised plans</a> late last year, which also allowed for as many as 539 new apartments to be created onsite across 3 separate buildings - no word was given yesterday on their status.

The redevelopment will create an estimated 2,350 jobs, including 1,150 during construction and 1,200 permanent positions upon completion.

The New Glen will also act as a hub for the <a href="/news/could-glen-waverley-emerge-as-another-eastern-suburban-apartment-hub">hundreds of additional apartments</a> slated for Glen Waverley's Activity Centre.

Valued at $53 million, Alke will include 95 apartments across two buildings divided by a communal residents’ terrace, along with retail at ground level. Designed by SJB Architects, Alke is a far grander expression than Pellicano's first residential project - twelve solid brick apartments in Oakleigh Street - which was completed in the suburb over 46 years ago.

Alke has been positioned to capture the local first home buyer and downsizer market.

Vicinity and Pellicano provide Monash with a development boost

Vicinity Centres, operator of The Glen, gained a decisive win last week with City of Monash deciding to issue a Notice of Decision that will allow the operator to considerably boost the number of apartments it has planned as part of its wide-ranging redevelopment of the Glen Waverley shopping complex.

Subject to a number of conditions, the latest version of The Glen's pending $500 million overhaul will see apartment numbers rise from 427 to 539. Post approval of the previously intended redevelopment, Vicinity Centres went back to planning, introducing the proposed amendments during August.

NH Architecture remains the project's principal design driver, with UNStudio also present across planning documents, suggesting that the international design studio has played a part in the design evolution of the project.

The tallest 'Signature Tower' which was initially at 76.51 metres has lost five levels to better meet Council expectations regarding height. The 'Kingsway Axial Building' remains at 13 levels while the 'Urban Building' has been approved at 12 levels, and with considerably increased girth.

The wash up now sees Vicinity Centres able to add 539 apartments across the three approved towers, with configurations including 155 x 1 bedroom apartments, 357 x 2 bedroom apartments, 22 x 3 bedroom apartments and 5 x 4 bedroom penthouses which will crown the 'Signature Tower'.

Included within the revamped centre will be a net total retail floor space of 73,024sqm and 3,540 retail car spaces, plus 674 new spaces devoted to residential and residential visitor use.

The Glen's forthcoming development will also strive to add a degree of placemaking by way of a new public square and pavilion that will dominate the corner of Snedden Drive and O'Sullivan Road.

City of Monash have in recent times made a conscious effort to encourage Glen Waverley's various developments to provide an active and engaging street level outcome. The Glen's public square will eventually sit opposite the new 15 level <a href="/buildings/galleria-glen-waverley-52-osullivan-road-glen-waverley">Galleria</a> apartment development with its active frontages, while Council is also pursuing a redevelopment of the Glen Waverley Central Car Park site.

It in time is likely to feature a new library and community hub, expanses of green public space and a variety of predominantly residential towers, in line with Council's vision for a revamped heart of Glen Waverley.
