When Antoinette Chan and her architect husband, Peter began casually searching for an investment property, they weren’t expecting it to evolve into a life-changing family decision.

But one visit to the display suite of <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/developers/abadeen-group">Abadeen</a>’s <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/buildings/koyo-crows-nest-1-11-rodborough-avenue-crows-nest-nsw-2065">KOYO</a> development in Crows Nest changed everything, and sparked a remarkable story of three generations choosing to live side by side in one of the suburb's most architecturally-striking new developments.

Antoinette, her mother Janet Khoo, and her sister, who is currently living in Singapore, each purchased an apartment in the same building, creating a rare and meaningful multi-generational living arrangement underpinned by modern design, community values, and premium convenience.

“It wasn’t planned,” says Antoinette, who purchased a three-bedroom garden apartment with her husband and teenage daughter. “Peter came across KOYO and encouraged me to visit because he had a lot of respect for Abadeen’s previous work. As soon as we saw it, we knew it wasn’t just an investment, this was a home.”

Shortly after, Antoinette suggested her mother, Janet Khoo, take a look at the same development. A long-time inner-city resident who had recently sold her property in The Rocks, Janet had experienced some health setbacks and was contemplating a move closer to her daughter.

“I walked into the display apartment, and it just felt right,” says Janet. “I didn’t look anywhere else. The space, the simplicity of the design, the light, everything gave me a sense of peace. It’s a new beginning, but it also feels like home.”

In a stroke of serendipity, Janet selected the two-bedroom apartment next door to her daughter, completely unaware of Antoinette’s purchase. Around the same time, Antoinette’s sister, who resides in Singapore, viewed the property via a virtual tour and chose to buy the apartment directly above Janet’s.

“We were all drawn to KOYO individually, and it just happened that our homes ended up vertically stacked, ground, first, and second floor,” Antoinette laughs. “It was a coincidence, but also a sign. This is where we’re meant to be.”

Designed by celebrated architect <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/architects/koichi-takada-architects">Koichi Takada</a>, KOYO delivered on all fronts for the Chan-Khoo family.

“Our garden apartment gives us the feel of a standalone home but with none of the maintenance,” says Antoinette. “All three bedrooms open onto a generous private garden, which is perfect for our dog Archie, and for entertaining. The open-plan layout and high ceilings make it feel airy, calm and luxurious.”

For Janet, security and accessibility were top priorities, and KOYO offered the ideal balance.

“At my age, I didn’t want to be climbing stairs,” she explains. “The first-floor apartment opens directly to the garden, and the building is small, which gives it a more personal, village-like feel. Yet I’m just steps away from my daughter and granddaughter. That gives me so much peace of mind.”

The family also appreciated the thoughtful amenities that avoided the excesses of some larger developments.

“We didn’t want a complex with too many facilities we wouldn’t use,” explains Antoinette. “KOYO has everything we need, generous storage, secure parking, beautifully landscaped walkways, and a stunning rooftop terrace with BBQ facilities that feels serene rather than busy.”

The location was another critical factor in the family’s decision. Though they had always lived closer to Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Antoinette says the transformation of Crows Nest was a revelation.

“When we returned from living overseas, we discovered Crows Nest had become this vibrant, walkable hub,” she says. “We love being able to stroll to cafés, restaurants, and shops on Willoughby Road. The new Metro makes the commute into the CBD effortless, and our daughter can walk to her school, it’s just next door."

Janet agree. “I was worried about giving up my inner-city lifestyle, but I’ve fallen in love with this area. It has everything I need, supermarkets, quiet streets, friendly faces, and it’s all a short walk away. I feel safe, independent, and connected.”

Sunkin launch Park House at sustainable masterplan, Highett Common

Sunkin Property Group are shaping up to launch their expressions of interest campaign for their environmentally-focused masterplan project, Highett Common.&nbsp;

Designed by the architects at ClarkeHopkinsClarke, the project is set to become the first medium-density Net Zero Carbon community within Victoria.&nbsp;

It will be the largest development outside of Melbourne CBD to pivot to all-electric, leading the charge and setting a new standard for property development innovation.

The $600 million-plus development has already received stage one planning approval, with the master plan set to span a massive 93, 400 sqm and be home to over 1,000 residences upon completion.&nbsp;

The project is set to benefit the wider community, with a conservation reserve alongside a public park also tipped for the development, along with a state-of-the art playground, a new public library and a community centre. &nbsp;

Sunkin will also deliver 4,000 sqm of parkland and conservation reserve to the 37 Graham Rd site and the Bayside City Council.

Pitched at catering to a wide demographic, stage one of Highett Common will feature an extensive range of residences, set to strengthen housing diversity in the area. “The demand for sustainable developments is increasing exponentially, and Highett Common’s eco-initiatives are an investment that will protect the site’s future values and save residents money by reducing energy costs and providing them access to green power,” he said.

Highett Common will also be providing further sustainability initiatives, including the installation of solar on each building and townhouse to offset grid electricity usage, and further reduce the emissions associated with the site’s operation.

The project will provide 100 percent Certified Greenpower to communal areas, EV charging provisions and an EV car-share service will be readily available to encourage residents to embrace green power.

Civil works commenced in October 2022 with the Display Gallery set to open to the public in early March.

Sunkin set to launch environmentally-focused masterplan, Highett Common

It's every developer's goal to sell out its project before construction commencement.

It's something that can only be achieved through two complementing elements; a well-thought out design plan, offering something different than what's available in an area, and a reputable development team who are trusted to deliver what they set out to.

Melbourne developer Young Group recently achieved the feat, selling out their 38-apartment project Custom Highett before it began construction.

And now buyers have moved into the recently completed building&nbsp;which came with a six-year building guarantee.

The sales were dominated by owner-occupiers, with the two-bedrooms predominantly snapped up by first home buyers, and the three-bedrooms more sought-after by the downsizer and empty nester demographic.

Joshua Muyambo from MAP Architect said they designed diverse apartment types - multifunctional - with ample flexibility.

"We've gone with a neutral palette, which focuses primarily on natural stone, and warm timber accents,"&nbsp;Joshua says.

The environmentally-friendly building secured an average 7.8-star natHERS energy rating, with no combustible cladding used in the façade materials.

Purchasers at Custom said they were attracted to the layout of the apartments, which have a real focus on indoor and outdoor living. The courtyard apartments feature wraparound outdoor spaces, which can be accessed from both the open plan living area and the bedrooms, maximising the amount of natural light each apartment captures.&nbsp;

The overarching driver that every purchaser highlighted as the most attractive proposition of Custom was the location.

Resident and downsizer Steven Ryan said he and his wife had been looking for around eight months before they found Custom.

"When we saw this one, it really jumped out at us because of the location," Steven says.

"That's all we knew at the start, was where it was. There was shops, public transport, and all those things we had wanted.

"It was the first time we felt that we should get in contact with the agent. We went and liked what we saw. We were sold."

Spring Yang, who heads up Young Group, said the location of the Station Street site made the team venture into Highett for the first time when they secured it in 2019.

"Custom is tucked away on a quiet residential street, while also being just 200 metres from the best shopping retail strip in Highett," Spring said.

"The Highett Street retail strip has a number of shops and cafes, as well as strong public transport infrastructure which easily links residents at Custom to the rest of Melbourne."

Young Group's latest project Tomorrow is another that's focused primarily on location, something that Spring says is the deciding factor in any new development the Young Group tackle.

"Tomorrow is ideally placed to enjoy the very best of Northcote - which was reported as Victoria's most liveable suburb in the recent <a href="https://www.pwc.com.au/important-problems/future-victoria/future-victoria-2021.pdf">'Future Victoria' report by PwC</a>," Spring says.

"Recognising that we are increasingly spending more time close to home, the local amenity and walkability of Northcote awarded it with ‘Top Live’ on the ‘Staying Local Score’ in the report.

"Tomorrow is located just a short stroll from the banks of Northcote’s Merri Creek – and has been designed to connect residents to all that Northcote has to offer, both in terms of nature and retail," Spring notes.

Young Group are going through the planning and approval process for their next three projects, Young Oakleigh, Victoria Brunswick, and Rose Essendon, the latter two apartment developments expected to go to market mid to late 2023.

Buyers move into recently completed Custom Highett apartments following pre-construction sell-out

Sunkin Property Group has commenced works on one of the most significant urban renewal projects in the Bayside area.

The 9.63-hectare former CSIRO site in Highett will become a $500 million plus mixed-use community with over 1,000 residences, a mix of apartments and townhouses, and a new public library.

Over 40 per cent of the site will be given back to the community, with one hectare planned for a public park and a further three hectares for a conservation area. The park will feature a children's playground and social areas.

Central to the development is its focus on connectedness and walkability, with common and public spaces between the built form providing opportunities for neighbours to connect. This is further enhanced via integrated wellness and fitness facilities including resident’s gym, pool and spa areas.

Over $10 million will be invested in infrastructure for the large-scale project including new roads, replacement of the Melbourne drain and the upgrading of local services over the next year.

Following the nod of approval in March from the Bayside City Council, Sunkin has appointed Delta Group who will begin a 12-month program starting from early October.

Sunkin Property Group’s General Manager of Property Lloyd Collins said commencing civil works is a significant milestone for the project, with the site having remained dormant for over a decade.

“This development will be of significant community benefit due to improved infrastructure and additional amenities, including the new park and conservation area for the public to enjoy.

“It will also provide greater housing diversity while catering to the forecast population growth within Melbourne and the Bayside area more specifically,” he said.

Sunkin is targeting net zero capable outcomes through environmentally sustainable design practices at the project.

Earlier this month, Sunkin lodged a Planning Permit Application for Stage 1 of the project which includes two apartment buildings and a collection of townhouses, all located adjacent to the proposed public park and serviced by the infrastructure works.

An aged care developer has snapped up a 11,981 square metre landholding in the Melbourne bayside suburb of Highett for $28.5 million.  
The permit-approved site at 32-40 Graham Street has plans for a retirement village for 90 residential apartments, a 122 bed aged care facility and 15 assisted living units together with communal facilities. 
It was sold by Savills agents Julian Heatherich, Benson Zhou and Jesse Radisich. 
Heatherich said the site sold for around $20,000,000 and, with the added value of the permit, has benefited on the revenue opportunities associated with the $20 billion-a-year residential aged care industry.
