Builder-developer ALAND has drawn back the curtain on its first city-focused new apartment development.

The North Sydney development, <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/new-apartments/the-walden-north-sydney-173-179-walker-street-north-sydney-nsw-2060">The Walden</a>, is the first time the company has ventured this close to the city, having previously completed thousands of apartments predominantly in Sydney's west, and more recently in Gosford.

<a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/developers/aland">ALAND</a> acquired the prime North Sydney site, spanning Walker and Hampden Streets just down the road from the Victoria Cross Metro station, for $240 million in June.

Now they've unveiled the new project, a mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments across a 30-level building designed by Rothelowman.

The Walden will capitalise on the site’s front-row position on the eastern fringe of the <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/developments/north-sydney-nsw-2060">North Sydney</a> CBD, which offers uninterrupted Sydney Harbour views stretching from the Sydney Harbour Bridge all the way to Sydney Heads.

The main tower will be flanked by a small four-level amenity building known as The Pavilion, offering exclusive resident-only amenities including a dedicated concierge service, a sauna and private wellness studio, a gymnasium and fitness studio, a resort-style rooftop pool and sundeck.

There will also be a&nbsp;residents’ lounge, private dining and a wine cellar, and co-working facilities with an on-site meeting room and boardroom.

Sunshine Coast-based <a href="https://www.apartments.com.au/developers/devcon-property-group">Devcon Property Group</a> has acquired one of Maroochydore’s most prominent development sites for $12 million unlocking the potentialfor a mixed-use project in the Cotton Tree precinct.

The 4,178 sqm site at 41–43 Aerodrome Road—well known locally as the former home to one of Australia’s last Sizzler restaurants—was sold via an off-market expressions of interest campaign by Colliers agents Nick Dowling and Baydn Dodds. More than 70 targeted buyer groups were approached, resulting in multiple competitive offers for the property.

Devcon Property Group Managing Director Michael Kain said the acquisition was a strategic move in line with the company’s focus on delivering high-quality projects in prime coastal locations.&nbsp;

New homes sales jumped around 15 per cent in June, according to the HIA New Home Sales report.

The data comes from a survey of the largest volume home builders in the five largest states.

Private new detached home sales rose by 14.8 per cent in June to 5,841.&nbsp;

Over the year to June, sales were 44.9 per cent higher than the previous year. 
&nbsp; 
&ldquo;The strength of new home sales nationally suggests that there will be a significant number of new homes entering the pipeline post HomeBuilder which will ensure activity remains elevated into 2022,&rdquo; HIA economist Angela Lillicrap said.

While sales in the June 2021 quarter are below the levels experienced during the nine months of the HomeBuilder program they are stronger than the same quarter in 2019 and on par with the June 2018 quarter, which was a strong year for detached home building.

&ldquo;Strong house price growth is also a contributing factor,&quot; she said.

The HIA publish an annual Housing 100 Report which lists the nation&rsquo;s top residential builders.

Metricon Homes top the last published list with a total of 4,534 new home starts across Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia.&nbsp;

Of these starts, 4,303 were detached houses and 170 were semi-detached dwellings,&rdquo; added Mr Reardon.

The second most active builder in 2019/20 &ndash; and the nation&rsquo;s largest apartment builder &ndash; Hutchies had 3,820 housing starts, followed by Multiplex with 3,486 starts.

Despite Covid, the 28th annual HIA&ndash;Colorbond&reg; steel Housing 100 Report 2019/20 survey showed that the number of new home starts by the nation&rsquo;s largest 100 builders increased from 67,694 to 69,459.

Victorian home builder Sherridon Homes is set to create a customer hub in Bendigo having bought a historic building in the heart of the town.

The hub, which will support growing demand for their homes, will service the wider area, including the Greater Bendigo and Shepparton regions.

Sherridon, who also have offices in Ballarat, Gippsland and central Melbourne, are preparing plans to submit to the local council to refurbish the commercial building at 2-4 Pall Mall.

They're seeking to remove to upper level hoarding to reveal and restore the original façade and windows, as well as turn the untenanted element of the 545 sqm space in to a colour selection showroom and office.

The building has a long history of commerce and trade dating back to the 19th century, and is currently partially tenanted, with a vacant portion most recently home to Dymocks book store.

Sherridon Homes, part of AHB Group, is on track to build around 1,500 homes this year across regional Victoria and Melbourne.

Its regional operations are headed up by seasoned industry professional Natalie King, the former managing director of JG King Homes.

The prestige Melbourne home builder Canny Builders has entered voluntary administration.

Builder Damian Canny called in the accounting firm PKF last Friday with the administrators Glenn Franklin and Jason Stone assessing whether the business can be sold.

PKF said it is “already aware of a number of parties interested in the business and the company’s IP.”

The 12 affected owners of home under construction have been contacted, the realestatesource website advised.

Mr Franklin said all efforts will be made to transition these projects as part of a business sale “or facilitate a transfer to builders of the home owners’ choice”.

The Canny Homes division has been building for 25 years with the dwellings typically priced between $1 million to $7 million.

Kip Harding of Red Consulting International, the company accountant, sought the referral to PKF.

Franklin initially met Canny, Harding and the builder's then financial officer Joshua Williams in late February this year.

In March they discussed a turnaround management plan.

The appointment was to Canny Builders Pty Ltd and CWD Holdings Pty Ltd.

In 2013 Canny took out the 2013 Australian HIA Australian Project Home of the Year award for its Lubelso concept home in Malvern.

The two-storey home features three integrated living zones, four bedrooms and an automated trapdoor to the cellar.

Prestige Melbourne home builder Canny Builders goes into voluntary administration

The announcement by the NSW Government that they will be funding $285 million for apprenticeships is good news for housing supply.
The current boom in construction in NSW and particularly in Sydney will need a continuing supply of skilled trades people.
The NSW Government support for a continuing number of apprentices in the building and construction industry is therefore essential for the future work-loads.
New South Wales currently has 400,000 people employed in the development / construction industry with 280,000 of these working on new residential projects.
While recent approvals for residential projects seem to be slowing down this is hopefully a short term dip that will be balanced by continuing growth.
The allocation of almost $300 million to a continuing program of apprenticeships is a good move to help the future of the industry and will ensure thousands of young people have opportunities to develop valuable skills and undertaking training which will help them secure employment.
But the NSW Government needs to carefully manage the current community concerns about the extent of development in the residential sector as well as for major infrastructure projects.
It is important that the current extent of development is maintained so that the thousands of apprentices trained through the government’s funds have employment opportunities now and into the future.
To ensure a good flow of construction work into the future the state government needs to also manage demands from councils to increase infrastructure levies and affordable housing levies that will add to the cost of housing and slow down the supply of new housing.

Apprenticeship funding is good news for housing supply: Urban Taskforce

For the second year in a row, Metricon Homes was revealed as the nation’s number one residential builder, at the launch of the HIA-COLORBOND® steel Housing 100 Report in Melbourne this morning.
<a href="https://www.metricon.com.au" target="_blank">Metricon Homes</a> reported a total of 4,367 starts - just two more than last year - across Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia.
Of these starts, 3,876 were detached houses and 491 were semi-detached dwellings.
The number of new houses commenced in Australia has fallen over the last year, but the bar for entry into the HIA–COLORBOND® steel Housing 100 Report continues to rise.
The number of starts required to make the list has increased from 96 to 108 – the highest entry hurdle on record.
The HIA–COLORBOND® steel Housing 100 Report shows that:
<ul>
<li>Australia’s 100 largest builders increased their starts by 8.5 per cent to 74,572 during 2016/17, the highest number of starts on record for the Housing 100 group;</li>
<li>The Housing 100 accounted for 45 per cent of all new dwellings started in 2016/17;</li>
<li>Revenue earned from home construction by the Housing 100 increased by 22 per cent to $22.61 billion in 2016/17.</li>
</ul>
The number of new dwellings commenced in Australia declined by 6.9 per cent in 2016/17 but the number of housing starts by the largest 100 Builders in Australia actually increased by 8.5 per cent.
These results show that even in a shrinking market, there are a smaller number of builders that are still growing their business.
The boom in apartments - particularly in Sydney and Melbourne - has been a major factor in this year’s results.
Multi-unit starts have declined this year compared to the previous year, but they still remain at very elevated levels.

<a href="https://www.abngroup.com.au" target="_blank">ABN Group</a> defied a slow market in Western Australia to achieve third place on the list.
The biggest mover for a second year in a row was the <a href="https://www.mjhgroup.net.au" target="_blank">MJH Group</a> with an increase of 517 starts in 2016/17.
This is in addition to their growth of 1,034 starts during the previous year escalating them to sixth place on the list of largest builders in Australia.
ACT-based <a href="https://www.geocon.com.au" target="_blank">GEOCON</a> more than doubled its number of starts – with an increase of 492 starts - in 2016/17. This makes them the second biggest mover in the year.
The NSW <a href="https://rilowgroup.com.au" target="_blank">RILOW Group</a> jumped 26 spots on the list to be the 58th largest builder in the country.
There are 17 builders appearing on the list for the first time, which are predominantly from NSW and Queensland.
The prior HIA-COLORBOND® steel Housing 100 Report 2015/16 revealed a fourth consecutive increase in new dwelling commencements for Australia’s largest volume builders, with Metricon topping the latest list.
The total number of HOUSING 100 starts was 69,161 in 2015/16, compared to the previous record of 69,100 in 2003/04 and the ten year high of 68,621 reached in 2014/15.
The report, that ranks Australia’s largest 100 residential builders based on the number of homes commenced each year, found that Metricon Homes was the nation’s number one home builder in 2015/16.
