Sunkin’s The Mews Collection tops out as next stage of Highett Common takes shape

Sunkin Property Group has topped out the second building in The Mews Collection at Highett Common, marking another milestone for one of the largest masterplanned developments currently under construction in Melbourne.

The Lightwood Release has just reached its full height, following the topping out of the Park Release earlier this year.

Both buildings, on track for completion halfway through 2027, form the third stage of Highett Common, a new 9.43-hectare neighbourhood featuring new parks, a regenerated native conservation zone, and within walking distance of Highett Station and village.

It's a major milestone for a project that was only announced three years ago, and follows several other significant moments for Highett Common this year.

Sunkin welcomed the precinct's first residents into the completed Park House and North Lane buildings at the beginning of the year, while the one-hectare public park and playground is now open.

Sunkin Property Group General Manager Property Lloyd Collins said reaching the top of The Mews buildings gave the team a chance to see how the next collection of apartments will connect with what's already been delivered.

“It’s fantastic to see the existing buildings, but see the topping out, go through the building, see some of the views from the top levels, the apartment configurations and the balconies and that connection to what is some of the most amazing landscaping for a development of this size,” Collins said.

“This is about 30 per cent of the overall development. So, there’s still lots more development to come.”

The progress means Highett Common is increasingly shifting from a major construction site into a functioning neighbourhood, albeit with a significant amount of the masterplan still to come.

With the structures of both Mews buildings now complete, much of the work is moving inside.

External cladding, windows and waterproofing are progressing, while internally plastering, tiling and joinery installation are underway across the two buildings. Some apartments have already reached the point where kitchens are being installed.

Work is also progressing below ground, with basement services being fitted out and waterproofing underway in the pool plant room.

The crane is scheduled to come down in early October as the construction program increasingly shifts toward internal and finishing trades.

Progress on the private resident amenity is moving in line with the apartments.

The indoor lap pool is now well advanced, with its structure substantially complete and above-ceiling services underway. It will form part of a wider collection of resident facilities including a gym, wellness area, communal dining and lounge spaces.

Outside the buildings, landscaping has been a major part of the Highett Common masterplan from the outset.

Tract Consultants is behind the landscape design, while ClarkeHopkinsClarke designed the architecture.

More than 40 per cent of the overall site is dedicated to open space, including parkland, landscaped walking connections and the three-hectare Highett Grassy Woodland Conservation Area.

Importantly, some of that is already being used.

Civil works across the precinct are complete and Highett Common's one-hectare public park and playground is now open, giving the first residents a sizeable piece of the masterplan to use while construction continues around them.

For buyers who don't want to wait for the next stage to be completed, Sunkin has also launched its Live Now offering across selected completed two and three-bedroom apartments.

The packages pair apartments that are ready to move into with furniture and appliance packages, providing another option for buyers alongside the apartments currently under construction in The Mews Collection.

With residents now living at Highett Common, the public park open and another two buildings structurally complete, around 30 per cent of the wider masterplan has now taken shape.
