A gracious freestanding villa in South Yarra has been bought back by the family who had held it for more than 110 years.

Descendants of Mary Harding, the widow who originally built the property in 1891, paid $2.15 million on the weekend bringing it back into the family fold.

The Cromwell Road house on its 753-square-metre holding was last sold in 2003.

Saturday's vendors had bought it at the 2003 executor's auction paying $1.16 million.

It sold through Marshall White agent John Manton, who called the property  on the market at $2.11 million.
