Melbourne's CBD residential expansion prospects as at 2040

Melbourne's central business district could have another 220,000 new residents within three decades, according to a new Victorian government planning report.

The residential expansion would be a 10-fold increase in the number of residents.

Southbank and Fishermans Bend precincts are predicted to each 80,000 new residents.

Additionally, a city north growth corridor through Carlton, stretching from the Hoddle grid to Grattan Street, could add an estimated 10,000 new residents.

The Arden-Macaulay precinct in North Melbourne could add 18,000 residents.

Docklands could add 10,500 and the Hoddle grid itself 20,000.

The state government report, Melbourne, let's talk about the future, predicts Melbourne will need an extra million homes in the next 30 to 40 years as the population increases to more than 6 million.

The 109-page report has been prepared by Professor Roz Hansen, the chairwoman of the ministerial advisory committee, metropolitan planning strategy.
